Shannon stepfather in porn arrest
Stepfather Craig Meehan
Craig Meehan was arrested at the family home

Detectives investigating the disappearance of Shannon Matthews have arrested her stepfather on suspicion of possessing indecent images of children.

Craig Meehan, 22, was arrested after officers on the Shannon Matthews case carried out inspections on a number of computers.

Mr Meehan was arrested at the family home at 0800 BST on Wednesday.

Michael Donovan, 39, of Lidgate Gardens, Dewsbury, West Yorks, has been charged with kidnapping Shannon.

West Yorkshire Police said in a statement: "During inquiries by the Shannon Matthews investigation team, the contents of a number of computers have been examined.

"As a result of this work, police have arrested a 22-year-old man from the Dewsbury Moor area on suspicion of possessing indecent images of children.

"He is currently being questioned at a West Yorkshire Police Station."

Horrible but hardly surprising. I think people would be shocked if they knew the true statistics on sexual abuse of children by family, stepfathers and mothers boyfriends. It is way more common than you would imagine but many do not get prosecuted due to lack pf evidence, they just get removed from the family home but usually the mother lets them back to abuse again.

Truly vast numbers of children are at risk everyday,

There is something really dodgy about this family, I just feel really sorry for the children!

Wasn't it a relative of the stepdad that kidnapped Shannon?

Very true. Children are at far more risk from their own families than 'stranger danger'

Often the Mothers are targeted by men because they have learning difficulties / are a bit slow and this gives them access to her children. If this is the case the Mother will usually lose custody of the Children and be denied immediate access because she is basically too unaware to be able to protect her children.

Not necessarily. The social services are severely under-staffed and over-stretched and kids will be left at risk much longer than most of the professionals would like: there's also a desperate shortage of foster carers too. Of course, they will act in cases of proven abuse but there are a lot of cases where parents/step-parents are given the benefit of some considerable doubt.

That's what made the recent Corrie storyline where Chesney was taken into care so ludicrous. The idea that a child would be taken into care because the washing-up hadn't been done for a few days would have made social workers laugh heartily.

Agreed, I meant once a prosecution has been started.

Gwylan - where can I find out about fostering in the UK? Is something me and Mrs TRHK have talked about for a long time and this thread makes me think I should be a bit more proactive.

British Association for Adoption Fostering is a good start. But your local council would also help.

As many people know, we adopted two kids and so have plenty of experience of dealing with social services and I know how run off their feet they are. I don't think there are many places in the UK that have a full complement of foster carers so I'm sure you'd be welcome.

Good luck

At least your kids will never be short of RED SHOES to wear as they get older Gwylan, HATS OFF to you and Mrs G, it's a thankless task but an honourable one.

At least you will have someone to carry your HAMMER and other tools when you get a bit older.

did anyone watch the documentry following the family? i did, and as much as it was car crash TV i thought the step father came over as just a sad man with nothing to do. the children were not frightened of him or changed their behavior in his presence, it was all very much day in the life of council trash. The mother and her friend openly laughed when reading newspaper reports that he'd beaten her, seems theres alot of bad blood with her mother.

the odd thing though was the lack of urgency and concern. my suspicion was that this was a setup, to get money from media/public. as for this arrest, i wonder how many people on this board have visted "teen porn" sites, either young looking or if europen probably underage by our standards. i reserve judgement.

I would be surprised if she ever goes home. The way the police always maintained that she was local and that she was still alive, always made me think that they knew more then was being reported in the press.

I guess that the computer was taken early on in the investigation and that they had an idea. But police work on computers is slow and they have more then likely only just got enough proof to arrest him.
