From the Beeb...

Shamed Italian clubs to be named

Italy's football federation will announce on Thursday the names of any clubs and individuals to be charged over allegations of match-fixing.

President Guido Rossi said the FIGC would make an announcement after the stock market closes at 1630 BST.

Any clubs charged face trial at a sports tribunal in Rome next week and could face bans, fines, relegation or be stripped of any trophies.

Champions Juventus, AC Milan, Lazio and Fiorentina have been investigated.

The verdict will coincide with the end of Italy's crucial World Cup match against the Czech Republic.

Italy need at least a draw against the Czechs to guarantee a place in the knock-out phase.

Thirteen of Italy's 23-man World Cup squad play for the four clubs that have come under scrutiny.

Separate criminal prosecutions could follow the FIGC trial which is expected to deliver its verdicts between 7 and 9 July - the weekend of the World Cup final.

Thats madness surely! Can't be a good idea to send your team out knowing half of them could be announced as cheats straight after! ???

The players dont have anything to do with it, so how can they be cheats?

The timing might not be great, but they have to get things going before the start of the new season.

I thought Buffon (and possibly others but i'm not expert, only things i've read) were a little bit anxious about the findings of this? Also its a bit of a distraction for players at Juve (or others) who might suddenly find they're in need of a new club cos they've been relegated!

Abort, retry, fail
If they have not been cheating then they have nothing to worry about.

Doesn't matter when they announce it. They have to stamp this sort of thing out, and having a greater impact than waiting until a good time to announce it is essential.

From a global perspective i agree, i just think that if it were all going on in England at Chelsea for example I wouldn't be too keen on Lampard, Cole and Terry suddenly finding out their teams been relegated midway through the biggest sports event in the world! :shootself

At the foot of the downs
Juventus are going into Serie C and Milan into Serie B, apparently...

Bloody hell, really?

That is amazing, justified from what I've read about the case - but I didn't think the authorities over there would have the balls to actually do it.
Cue six months of legal appeals and delays to the Italian fixture lists and kick off I guess.

Forza Viola - glad that Fiorentina aren't being punished as harshly!

Great sense of timing. We're playing one of the biggest games of the tournament today.

I admit that the timing isnt great, they could have left it until tomorrow but they have to do it sometime. As an Inter fan, I dont really care anyway, Milan and Juve deserve punishment.

Not sure what Milan will get, I reckon Juve will be in Serie B with a points penalty.

Good point mate.

None of the players are involved in this directly (cheating etc). Buffon may have gambled but it was supposedly on matches abroad, which is illegal under Italian FA rules, although he says it was before these rules were passed.

Just read again that it's actually going to be announced after the game, in which case I really dont see what the problem is.

Better that then them knowing before the game.

I think that Italian football needs to be seen to act this time.
