It is an entirely pointless, made for TV gesture, but once they've decided to go with it, you then look like a complete shit if you don't comply with it. Unless you are Wayne Bridge, in which case it is funny and justified.

when I was kid we never shook hands after the match, but the captain would make us give "3 cheers for Hollingbury Hawks (or whoever) Hip Hip......" (we never did this against Melford as they were wankers (you can't beat holding a grudge for 30 years!))

That would be AMAZING, I would bloody LOVE to watch someone like John Terry having to shout "three cheers for Blackburn Rovers...hip hip..." etc :lolol:

They should do it like they do in rugby and clap each other off the field. Shows a sportsman like respect without the need to play games shaking/not shaking hands.
