it's not the event GB has the best chance of gold in ffs, it's the mens 100m, always has been since I were a lad at least. I can here David Colman getting all excited about Valeri Bortsov as I type.....

I'm sure the 100 m has always been referred to as this in commentary, at least for the last 20 - 30 years.

I know, my point was as there will be no GB competitors in the 100m, despite the millions of pounds (that's 100's of millions AUD) spent on the event, over the years, what will be OUR blue riband at OUR Olympics.

I have always thought of it as the 1500 metres. The BBC made a really big deal of Britain winning the Blue Riband in the days of Coe, Ovett and Cram

That's my thinking. However now it seem's to be the 100 metre's ? Just me but i have a little more time for the 1500.

The 1500 meters was always referred to at the time of Coe and Ovett as the blue riband event.

Will be interesting to see which race the commentators use it for this year.

the blue riband distance is the men's 1500m (or mile) , more recently though the men's 100m is regarded by broadcasters as the main event.

I think they may use the term in plural these days - "one of the blue riband events..."

It's definitely the womens beach volleyball for me.

Blue Ribbon event, nah, more of a white kleenex event

If you're thinking of Redgrave, wasn't he in the pairs for two of those golds. Won one with Andy Holmes who died last year from wiels disease and the next one with Pinsent!

He won the 8 in 84, pair in 88, pair with Pinsent in 92 and 96, coxless 4 in 2000, Pinsent won 4 again in 2004 and then our boys won it again in 2008.

I think at a push I could name the 100m champion at the Olympics going back to 1968 but would only get a few of the 1500m winners and that is only because of Ovett and Coe.
