i was gonna post this poll soon but noticed perseus had beaten me to it. but he has messed it right up. all my mates (virtually none of whom are brighton fans) all pronounce it as you would 'farmer'. is this right or is 'fal-mer' the correct way? many thanks.

Having spent my younger life growing up on the Falmer Road - we always pronounced it Falmer. Like the jeans. Of course there may be another way - it is just that I never heard it.

Which side of the road did you live on?

Well that is a song I will enjoy singing ........

I did used to have a football fantasy that there would be a stadium in Rottingdean - using the Downs as a one stand. In my mind it all worked - and there were no transport/bat issues either.

Brighton side - Rottingdean end.

I'm a west side myself. Therefore, we pronounce it differently. :jester:

Fawmer 1607 is a fallacy. The earlier Old English etymon of Fæl mere is better.

Does get over the problem of not being actually in Falmer.

On one side of the main road the villagers can call it Fawmer, when we know it is really Falmer where the stadium is planned for. Just depends on which side of the road you are on.

Or the railway station, one side is Fawmer for Sussex Uni and Falmer for Brighton Uni. No problem really.

It is in the medieval records as being pronounced fawmer or fahmer.

The etymon of fæl in the first record of the word mean fallow-coloured and this matches up with the local geology.

Nobody uses the pronounciation fawmer unless they are being pretentious. I have instinctively used Fow(l)-ma. (Sounds more like the modern Brighton acccent to me.)
