Apologies in advance, - I really don't mean to be in any way tactless, on this day of all days: quite the opposite in fact.

But I really can't understand how come it has somehow been deemed to be acceptable and ok for at least two films to be made about about the events on Flight 93 (the one that didn't hit its intended target because the passengers made the hijackers crash it beforehand), whereas - rightly - people would feel horrified at making a film about, say, the desperately poor sods who also died in equally horrific circumstances in the WTC towers themselves.

I had the misfortune to catch the end of Flight 93 on telly the other day: it was just the same as any old typical 1970s/Airport-style disaster movie: screaming women everywhere, sniffly goodbyes on the phone etc etc. Except, of course, it wasn't. Because it really happened, only seven years ago, to real, innocent people. Nothing but ghoulish entertainment. Do we have the gruesome prospect of WTC-based disaster movies to come? I do hope not, but I can't see any chance of Hollywood making a tasteful retreat from making them.

There is indeed - it is in the bargain bin at asda, which suggests that the general public think the idea is inapproaprate, even if Hollywood doesn't.

There is one. It's called World Trade Centre.

I'm not sure how linked to those in the towers it is though.

As much as I abhor what happened on 9/11 films being made are inevitable as films have been made on everysingle aspect of human life and human events.

For what its worth I think the 2 major hollywood films United 93 and World Trade Centre have been good films and not exploitative.

Flight 93 is a made for tv film.

I thought they were decent enough films Nibble but this is not the thread to have a slanging match about it.

United 93 was good although the on-board stuff is completely fictional.

I think they studied all the phone calls and messages and got it about as close as they could ?.

I can't remember if it was United or Flight 93 that I saw but it certainly WAS exploitative in the extreme - nothing but a schlocky, cheesy disaster flick by numbers: heavy on cheap emotion and screaming, light on tact, dignity, class. It must have been delightful for the recently-deceased relatives of people when that was doing the rounds. It didn't know about this WTC by Oliver Stone, but I'll be giving it a wide berth.

United 83 is far superior to the one you saw Flight 93 and much more dignified if thats possible.

On a slightly different note but still about the same thing, there is a documentary tonight on C4 (I think) about a woman in the US who lied about being in one of the towers, above the point of impact, and told her "survival story" to millions of people, but eventually got found out as a faker. Could be quite interesting.

at what point do things become acceptable for dramatisation? When has a respectable amount of time past?

Blimey people go on jack the ripper walks, but if you set one up taking punters driving round leeds in a lorry to look at parks and wasteland people would have the hump.

relatives of people who were EATEN by the rugby players I bet were a little pissed off too and i cannot imagine them dashing to the marina to watch it.

to expect any dignity from the entertainment industry is hopeful at best, not to say elevating its position in society far above one it actually merits IN REAL LIFE.

I heard they had to cut a scene from Spiderman (the first one just before it was released), because there was a scene where he'd spun a web between the twin towers. Can't remember where I heard that though, dunno if its true.

I don't want to drag this too far off topic, so please ignore this if people feel I am.

I saw Cloverfield over the weekend. It was a pretty good film, I enjoyed it and so did the missus. Looked on wikipedia to see what kind of reception it had got and apparently a lot of people had slagged it off as 'opportunist' saying it was referencing 9/11 and that it was cheap and tacky to play on 9/11. Now the only 'references' I could find were the fact that it was set in NY and the fact that a few people initially thought it was a terrorist attack (which is surely more a sign of the times that we live in rather than a direct reference to 9/11). Did I miss something? What did others think?

It was VERY 9/11-esq when they dived for cover into that store, and huge clouds of dust went billowing past the windows from the collapsing buildings. I'm amazed you didn't make the connection - it was almost the same as some of the news footage on that day.

I believe this to be true, although I cannot remember when I learnt this fact.
