The Premier League is to introduce semi-automated offside technology from next season, in the hope of reducing the time it takes to make VAR decisions.

The system will use camera footage and tracking software to calculate the position of players at the moment of a potential offside, replacing the need for VAR teams to do so. In trials, this process has been shown to reduce the average length of a VAR decision by 31 seconds.

Clubs voted unanimously to introduce the technology at a Premier League shareholders’ meeting on Thursday, with its first use expected in the autumn but not at the season’s start.

Exactly this.
VAR has clearly had an impact on the standard of the officials as they can make all the mistakes they want and VAR will always check what they've done, and still get it wrong.

If its the same as the WC then it will be. Will it be the same tech at all grounds though? Not sure Selhurst can take the degree of sophistication required?

They should bin assistant referees, incompetent lot consistently shown up by VAR. Semi-automated makes their roles almost redundant.

What is the point of the "assistant" refs now. (let alone when this comes in) - they literally don't give anything at all on the pitch and now won't need to give offsides.

Surely the technology can also give throw ins, goal kicks and corners, and make sure the ball is overlapping the corner arc as it does for goal line technology. And measure 10 yards for free kicks. I don’t want it but it’s coming.

I wonder if this is going to involve clubs having to make infrastructure changes to their grounds so that every ground has the same angle selections for the cameras.

Watching VAR decisions on the telly most grounds have good angles, nice views straight across the defensive lines. Other grounds have awful angles and if those are used in this semi-automated system its potentially going to introduce further wonkiness.

Apart from time scale offside is not biggest problem with VAR. Go back to letting refs decide if a foul in box as its impossible for VAR to make a proper judgement when its slowed down.

Presumably this technology will do both - it draws the lines in the correct places, unlike John "The Twat" Brooks.

they found it reduced by average of 31 seconds... ffs already way too long, shouldnt take more than 30sec in first place. they are trying to apply mm precision with tools measuring cm.

they should stop wasting time and fix the offside rule to make it work.

Software to CALCULATE the position of players - wonder if the calculations are as accurate as the current frame rate which is not up to the job.
