I have finally conceded that as the majority of my music collection is now "ripped" and stored via iTunes match I can now start to dispose of my CD's.
You'd be breaking the law

You'd be breaking the law

Too late, already done it. Presumably Apple are breaking the law as well by offering the service of storing the files thus ripped.

Used Music Magpie in the end, probably not getting the best price for them but then with 800+ CD's to deal with the thought of itemising and finding ways of getting a little bit extra for them did not seem attractive - got an average of around 75p each. Service not bad and once I had got into using my daughter's iPod to input the bar codes (theoretically you can actually scan them with the iPod but it took me about 3' to do one!). It baffles me where the market for all these used CD's is.

:thumbsup:If anyone is thinking of using one of these sites PM me first and I'll get you a bit more as long as you don't have a collection of STEPS, take that and Mariah Carey.

I've got LOTS of Prince but it would have to some awesome money for me to let them go.................especially my One Night Alone Box Set :rave:

Call the cops!
No, you can rip them, you just have to keep the originals.

Don't tell Edna, that's me and presumably several tens of thousand Music Magpie users stuffed then.

In answer to mistahclarke - no I didn't experience any issues with the service. It may have helped that the courier they use locally is the same one who seems to be around our house every day dropping off/picking up Mrs. P's Next orders so we had her direct line to arrange things. Orders took around 14 days from the items being picked up to the cheque landing on the doormat. As I said earlier you can probably get a better price if you have the time to research other options - I don't - so if you accept the convenience of the service balanced against the financial side then I would recommend it.

Still baffles me where the market is for all the CD's they buy.

I believe they trade as zoverstocks. On Amazon they have over 2 million feedback ratings and over 150000 on play.com. Looks like they are doing ok...

One of the UK poundshop chains has entered the market here (can't remember which one) as Dealz and sells "refurbished" albums, I guess they come from that kind of purchase scheme. They're in replaced jewel cases and re-shrinkwrapped.

Just sold mine and the missus's entire CD collections last week (over 400 albums in all combined).

As we wanted our stuff to find good homes, we offered the majority of them out to mates for 50p a CD first. We had takers for about a quarter of them, then the rest we flogged on to Music Magpie.

Made sense really, we've got all of our music on ipods and drives now and have put on a CD only about three times in the past year.

We're just waiting for the Music Magpie funds to arrive, and when they do, those funds can then go towards a nice new telly just in time for the European Championships

What's the deal these days with digitizing and getting rid? Will Hiney be getting shot of his programme collection now they are digitized?

I have my CD collection ripped and use Media Player to listen to them, but I could never bring myself to part with the actual discs. A lot of the cd releases these days come in deluxe packaging and it's nice to have something tangible to look at and to have a browse through the sleeve notes every now and then.

Depends on how sentimental you are about the physical album rather than the music upon it. I have got ride of virtually all the CD's in the house, keeping only the first one I ever bought ( A classic rock compilation marketed by a Miami Radio Station 97GTR in 1987 and purchased there whilst on holiday in the US for the first time in case anyone is the slightest bit interested) and a couple of signed CD's purchased at a recent gig (Show of Hands and Richard Shindell if anyone cares). I respect other peoples right to feel differently about the "physical" disk itself.

My music is backed up on 2 hard drives at home plus on iCloud Match so unless something catastrophic happens with Apple (in which case I suspect that music might be the least of anyone's worries) it is still there.
