Self employed/own your own business?

Seriously considering becoming self-employed. I have a business proposal and have taken advice from a business advisor but is anyone out there self emplyed and do you have any advice for me starting out?

Well, you see this is half the reason I want to branch out on my own is because I am bored in my work!

Very brave but if it works you will earn more than a company will probably ever pay you.

I think the biggest question is what is the investment and if it does badly wrong where will that leave you.

Give us an idea of what sort of business you want to run? Is it one with little start up costs (ie a service)

Fresh from the benefit of my hindsight, have a reserve of cash behind you for bad cashflow periods like when clients go bust owing you money! And make sure you save money each month for your tax, cos your tax bill comes around quicker than you think!

Get in touch with the Start Up Co in Burgess Hill. They run loads of cheap courses and you are also entitled to about 3 hours of one to one guidance from an expert in the areas you require help with.

Thanks. It is a security based, service business, so few start up costs. The Company in Burgess Hill is the one I am in contact with and is proving very helpful. I have some experience of being self employed but not as a full time income. I do have some experience with keeping my own books but Shirt, I will always keep you in mind. Long way to go yet though.

Its more work than you think, but more rewarding...
Do the paperwork as it needs doing, never leave it to pile up. If you have spare cash to pay a book keeper or accountant - its well worth it whilst you're learning the ropes.
Advertise advertise advertise...its amazing that an ad which you may think has been useless ends up being the one that gets you your biggest client...

Used to live entirely off nixers (sat installing/DJing/fixing peoples f***ed PCs, etc), its not fun. Neither is doing your taxes at the end of it.

Depends on what you want advise on ...should be able to get a local accountant to give you a free introductory meeting

But they are cheaper for a reason. For example an accountant will probably know more about tax laws and be able to provide more advice on tax avoidance.
