Remember the incident well. Should probably not be discussed on an open forum like this.

I'm reading quite an interesting book at the moment. It's called Culture in Camouflage by Patrick Deer and it's a study of how literature responsed to the events of World War II.

One of his central arguments is that while many existing accounts of 1940s fiction portray it as retreating to a comforting but bland social realism after the years of modernist experiment, many war-time writers in fact continued with modes of late modernist experiment. But that they had to disguise what they were doing because of prevailing anti-modernism dictated by the national narrative demanded by the war machine and conservative social pressures. Hence the literary experiment of the time was culture in camouflage.

I think I agree with the thesis in as far as it is clearly absurd to write off 1940s fiction as unambitious and unadventurous. As this author points out, Henry Green and Elizabeth Bowen - to name but two - continued to register cultural shocks and displacement in interesting ways in their writing. But is this late modernism? Or proto-postmodernism? Or something different again? That's an interesting question which I think partly negates Deer's thesis because many of the modernist modes - for example the prevalence of interior monologue - are not adopted during the 1940s.

Still got one chapter to go though so I'd be happy to update you on my conclusions a little later.

2 Slices of Bacon
2 Sausages
1 Vegetable Roll (sausage meat mixed with scallions)
2 Tomatoes
4 Mushrooms
2 Eggs
1 Soda Farl
2 Potato Farls

Slice Tomatoes in half, place in low heat frying pan with a little oil.

Place Vegetable Roll and Sausages into frying pan and cook on low heat.

Slice Mushrooms in half and pop into frying pan.

Place bacon under a medium-heat grill.

Move tomatoes under grill with bacon.

Slice Soda farls in half through the middle, exposing the inner bread.

Cut Potato Farls in half, to create triangles.

Remove sausage, vegetable roll and mushrooms from frying pan. Keep warm under the grill.

Crack eggs into frying pan and cook gently.

Remove eggs once cooked.

Add more oil to pan and turn heat to high.

When hot, but not smoking, add potato and soda farls to pan. Turn constantly to cook evenly.

Remove when golden brown.

Serve immediately.

Anybody remember when the Brewery Tap was briefly taken over, maybe ten years ago now, by a frothing-at-the-mouth Glasgow Rangers landlord and there were Red Hand Of Ulster flags draped all over the walls? Not good.
