Okay the result wasn't what we wanted, but we've just gone above Man City!

The BBC says that it's not on alphabetical order, but on our head to head result against them.

Okay we're very unlikely to end the weekend second, but if Liverpool beat City we'll have had a disappointing result that leaves us in the Champions League places at the start of December!

Sky confirmed it was on goals scored, and because we beat Man City.

So we just need liverpool to give city a good walloping to send them into negative goal difference, West Ham to beat Arsenal, and.....well, I'm conflicted whether ir not I want villa to beat Chelsea, I'm not sure which team i dislike the most.. Maybe a draw and settle for 3rd place on goal difference.

It can’t be both. It’s because we beat City. Our goal records are identical.

That’s Sky commentary for you. The woman kept saying Brighton had missed a chance to go second by not winning, when I knew we were. Then when the graphic came up, she had to say we were second.

True.

We‘ve only met once this season so our 3 points (2:1) at home to Citeh puts us in 2nd place (for another few hours at least!) but if we’d already played Citeh away too and been been beaten 0:1 (or more) and both sides took 3 points each from both games, then Citeh’s goal away would trump our 2:1 win at home so goals scored matter not just wins.

It’s true that head to head counts but, I think strictly speaking, not until the ‘competition concludes’. Still, it looks nice, meaningless as it is at this point. Cheered me up a bit.

It ‘counts’ as much as any position counts a third of the way through the season.

Agreed. A long way to go. 'In season' tables can be odd though. They don't always reflect the rules that come into play at the end, where head to head is involved. Not sure of their current stance but in the past on international competitions UEFA have sometimes ordered teams according to goal difference/goals scored etc even though H2H is the over-riding factor - waiting until they've played each other twice.

As I walked down to the concourse yesterday, feeling fairly down after our second half performance, someone behind me said 'Mind the Gap'.

That cheered me up

I’m outraged. Clearly not good enough. We should have won all those games we drew or lost and we’d be 8 points clear at the top. FAB OUT
