OK, just to clarify:

1. England fans are not all hooligans
2. Scotland fans are not all saints

BUT

3. If you find a Dutch fan who was in England for Euro 96 and Scotland for Saturday's play-off, I'll put money on them saying that they felt several times more welcome up here. And not just because the pubs stay open later (although that's a welcome bonus).

Oh, and don't worry Jambo, I'm not a Hibby - just living in Leith. There's only one team I follow, but it's a bit of a trek to get to most of the games...

Not sure I agree with that about fans not being made welcome in this country. I was in Sheffield at college in Euro 96, and the Danes arrived mob-handed (15,000), drank the place dry, and had a ball for two weeks. They were popular, were made very welcome, and it was great to see.

If you find an English Fan who was in Scotland for Euro Play Off 4 years ago and also went to France 98, Euro 2000 and Japan 02, I will put money on them saying they felt several times more welcome by the locals (not police or local turks)there than they ever did in Scotland!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

I, for 1 can't stand scotland & their Football supporters. I used to support Scotland against every team (other than the other home nations) until I went to Ibiza in 98. The scottish people there took great delight in England going out of the World Cup and spent most of their holiday trying to wind up the English there about it. While I realise that they dont represent the whole of Scotland it's your personal experiences that decide your feelings and because of my experience I hope that Scotland lose every international they ever play (bar Iraq & Argentina). :ascarf:

My experience of most Scots is that they are quite happy for England to win as long as it isn't against them. And a good thing too, for it is a sign of a confident Scottish nation when they can be friendly towards their nearest neighbour and ally.

I tend to laugh at sweaties who enjoy seeing us lose. I used to work with a bloke from Perth, Scotland who used to enjoy seeing England lose to the Aussies in the cricket, despite the fact that Angus Fraser was playing at the time. There comes a point when you just look like a bitter, sad **** and he clearly reached it then.

yes, lets all give a big cheer for the 56 scottish fans who were deported during France 98.

What? You never heard about that because you were in the UK, and the British media aren't interested in 'scottish hooligans, only english'.

I was in Marseille at the time - the trouble that I saw was started by 'local' North Africans, but don't let a little thing like the truth get in the way of a good England bashing session.

I realise that there are a large number of English morons, who travel abroad just to get drunk and cause trouble, but don't start pouting your 'Scottish fans are great' bollox, because it's just not true.

But you keep living in your dream-world 'Leith', and hope the Scots keep up all that 'jovial anti-English banter'

Well I'm English, as I said in the first place, and I've no wish to get involved in "a good England-bashing session" - but I've lived in both Scotland and England through the years, and in my experience (can't speak for anyone else), a large majority of Scotland fans embody what international football should be about, and too many England fans embody what it shouldn't be about. If you don't agree, then fair enough.

Actually this was very big news in Scotland thanks to the good old Daily Ranger, sorry Record. This was a bus load of casuals apparently made up of all the pathetic "top boys" from the various casual firms in Scotland. The French police got wind of it and sent them back before they could create any aggro. I'm pretty sure I'm correct in saying that only one Scotland "fan" was arrested in France for "hooliganism". He was sent home in disgrace and if the Tartan Army had got their hands on him he would have been lynched as wpuld the rest of these scumbags. There are plenty of mindless hooligans up here. They just don't attach themselves to the national team. Unfortunately yours do, which is a shame for the rest of the decent law-abiding England fans.

on the other hand to be fair to the scots, when we went up to hampden park for the Euro 2000 qualifier playoff, although there was your usual tension around the ground (a few bottles chucked at the buses transporting us from the station, and a lot of spitting), in Glasgow that Sat night (and the fri night for that matter), everyone was friendly towards us and made us feel very welcome.

I remember chatting to some locals in a pub before the game, and it was all good fun - they even let us drape our flag over a window, but that might be down to glasgow city centre being a friendly place. I'm not sure if it would have been as friendly in some out-of-town estate....
