The one thing we should be grateful of is that long serving managers are impossible to replace. The break up of the Liverpool bootroom saw their relative decline, Arsenal are probably only looking good this season after Wenger and Man U still haven't replaced Fergie, who looms over the whole place like some disapproving granddad. Potter went at the wrong time in a classless fashion but at least we haven't made him director of football or named a stand after him.

Politics aside so many great managers of that era were from solid working class areas, an extraordinary proportion from Glasgow. So what they had was a sense of community, something Potter thinks you get by drinking coffee in Rockwater.

Let me get this right....you're feeling quite negative about Potter right now....right?

Contrasting with your repeated shows of approval, love even, during his tenure.

Oh, but, hang on.....

???

I've calmed down now.

Potter and the entire coaching staff were basically asked if they want to coach in the Champions League. That's the absolute pinnacle of anyone's career. And don't they deserve it?

Ben Roberts has been an absolute revelation in coaching our keepers. Bruno a legend. Why wouldn't we want them to get the chance to be the absolute best and win trophies? I want success for them.

I HATE Chelsea. But stepping back. We are a great club and this is a great advert for us. The only constants at this club are you and I... and Tony Bloom.

So **** it. Good luck to them.

What bollocks. If he’s successful fans will love him and want him to stay. If not fans will boo and want him sacked. No one cried when we sacked the likeable, loyal Hughton and his team. Apparently loyalty only counts if you’re good.

Actually lots of people (not everyone, but lots) absolutely lost their shit when Hughton was sacked. And that was despite the terrible football.

Bottom line, we had to sack Hughton, and Potter had to accept the Chelsea job (and take his comfort blanket of assistants with him). We can try to game the system with carefully written contracts, and even a bit of borderline legal low cunning, but everyone in this particular game is trying to maximize their advantage. It is what it is.

I remember Auberon Waugh on an early prototype radio 5 phone in, fending off an attack from someone bemoaning the state of things. He said "You want to change society because you want my wealth and possessions. Likewise I want society to remain the same because I want to keep my wealth and possessions.". I must admit, I was torn between channeling the anger of my socialist 'politics of envy', and tittering. I seem to recall that I did, in fact, titter.

As I've said repeatedly about this, one should try not to feel bitter. It won't make anyone feel better and it will neither bring Potter back, nor make him fail at Chelsea. And I say that as someone who awoke feeling sad again this morning owing to the events.

Oh I agree, I'm not saying we shouldn't have sacked Hughton, but then neither am I feeling massive anger and bitterness toward Potter whose success with us has bought him a huge offer. Live by the sword, die by the sword.

End of the day, he leaves us in a far better position than when he arrived, not just league position either, but a squad full of valuable young talent.

Do I hope he fails at Chelsea? Yes, but then I hope any manager of Chelsea fails, so nothing personal really.

Sorry, you misunderstand: WE sacked Hughton and his entire staff, and that's ok because we're the good guys. I mean he only did exactly what was asked of him that season, was sacked the day after telling fans that he couldn't wait for the following season and went completely out of the blue for us to then nick Potter and his staff from Swansea less than a week later.

When we do it, it's intelligent planning, but when someone does it to us then it's a malevolent, Machiavellian stratagem concocted by the evil Chelsea Chairman and his insidious acolyte Potter - out to strike at the heart of the club he claimed he worked for.

Honestly, the level of delusion from some people (not you) is ridiculous. I've said it before, I'll say it a thousand times: Loyalty in football is for fans and fans alone. For everyone else, it's just business. The sooner people realise this, the better.

Potter left. He would do one day - it's just slightly sooner than we wanted.

He left dishonourably, so what? And only by leaving before his contract expired. But then many people have left full time jobs for better pastures without considering the consequence on their employers.

Whether or not his team left is irrelevant, some came with him anyway.

The real rub is though, Chelsea paid us for Potter as a saleable asset - and gave us circa £20m up to £25m if you believe the rumours for the team. Less £3m paid to Swansea for that asset.

That is equivalent to roughly 8 or 9 positions in the end of season PL payout. So the sale of Potter gives us an equivalent league lift from 17, at worst case, to 8th or 9th. Guaranteed and in the bank.

Of course that assumes that we won't be relegated and with 13 points already it will take a real flop of new manager to achieve that. Anyway, in Bloom we trust; other good managers exist.

And it doesn't consider European football which is a dream rather than a certainty anyway. Or the poaching cost of a new manager.

But, hey, it's not the end of the world.

Actually not a bad bit of business.

They've gone, let's get on with the business. Maybe invest in a new striker :dunky:

FWIW - Potter was a great motivator of unproven, less-performing players and teams to get results, he's unproven as a winner at the highest levels. He may not succeed - Chelsea are taking a far greater gamble on this deal than little-old-Brighton.

The great thing about having a mind is the ability to change it

Let me give you an NSC timeline.

December 2020. Team failing to beat really poor sides, one win at home in the whole calendar year. Finishing an under 9s team would be ashamed of. NSC does a "Potter In/Out" poll and he wins by approx 55/45. Bloom keeps utter faith with him while many, yes, obviously me included, think he's out of his depth and say so.

Performances slowly improve but still we're a team with no real more points than Hughton got us in his first season but with FAR better players. Still Bloom sticks with him. Icy Gull asks me on here what he needs to do to get fans like me onside. I reply "turn the performances into points".

And he does. And I am onside. And for about 10 matches everything is absolutely wonderful. Then, at the first sniff of high class totty, he decides enough is enough and rips out our entire first team coaching staff to boot.

I'm feeling very negative about his utter disrespect of the faith Tony Bloom showed him when people like me didn't and I will be feeling negative about it at least until I see who we've got in to clean up this shitshow. But possibly for the rest of my life. I'm still bitter about Stains v Spurs in 78

Indeed. If he'd been rubbish we'd have wanted him sacked - and it would probably have happened. Absolutely no one would be saying 'yeah, he's not not very good, but we must be loyal to him and let him see out his contract.' There is no loyalty in football, we all know that, even those of us who are upset and pissed off and are ranting uselessly about how 'unfair' it all is.

Not really. It's a long winded way of saying that for a lot of his reign Potter wasn't my idea of cake at all, but he nicked off just at the time he became pretty much everyone's favourite Victoria Sponge. NSC was vastly different in it's appraisal of him over the last season and six games.

But this IS why I am suspicious of long term projects. For those all parties need to buy in. Seems only TB who was fully committed in this case  . So us fans get to be frustrated as the teething problems give a season or two below par but only enjoy the fruits of the labour for a short time.

Under Potter top ten was easily happening again this season. Now we're just going to have to survive (again) as another project gets going.

The thing about football supporting, more than anything in life, is that if you choose you can abandon yourself to a moment, and justify any position or change of position, and it doesn't ever matter. There will always be enough 'bits' to create a narrative. I will hold my hand up to my own episodes of double gateauxing, albeit they will be different from Guinness Boy's. It won't stop me digging him out from time to time, though . And he always takes it with good grace. I have come to this conclusion after a brief VAR check

I mean, once you were happy with things and it turned into cake, it suited you that it was now Potter's turn to be loyal back, even though for the first 2 years your finger was hovering over the eject button. You had your cake and Potter then refusing offers was to be your eating it.

We're all different, and you know I've been a Potter fanboy from day#1, but conversely I'm over it, I'm not mourning his loss, feeling betrayed, he's left us in a great position, a highly prized team of young players, and we now appoint a new manager in our strongest position ever. I'm actually excited about a new chapter. Think we can kick on because so much has changed for the better behind the scenes. Think we've established a strong structure that new people can slot into, a bit like on the pitch - Bissouma who?

Yes, but that's because the long-term project will only ever be Bloom's. Potter was a key component, sure, but a component nonetheless. Players, coaches managers, director's etc are all singing to Bloom's songsheet, not Potter's. The best thing about this club, given it's size, is that we DO have a plan and the most important person in it is unlikely to ever leave voluntarily.

If it had just been him, Billy and Bjorn maybe.

But the players have lost a friend and mentor in Bruno and the best GK coach in England. You can't just recover from that.

At no point did I write "Bruno and Roberts out".

Quite possible GP, Björn and Billy were also friends and mentors, and that there's more very good GK coaches around.

Can and will recover from all of this is my guess.

Roberts is pretty much the best. I notice we've not rushed to hire Chelsea's old one so there's at least one big six club he trumps.
