Depends in what context you use it. Calling someone a black savage I would imagine is a no no

Bas Savage does nothing for me either (in fact, all footballers called Savage are definitely inappropriately named from a "street" perspective")

The great French social anthropologist, Claude Lévi-Strauss (who, incidentally, will be 100 years old on 28 November), wrote a very fine book entitled La Pensée Sauvage. This was translated into English, as The Savage Mind.

The French edition of the book had a picture of a wild pansy on the cover, mainly because Pensée Sauvage means "wild pansy".
