News like this ought to galvanise public football opinion against the Saudis and also the owners of Newcastle Utd FC as they drag that club into the cesspool they inhabit. Neom is also set to be one of the venues for the World Cup 2034 which Saudi is hosting after Australia pulled out stating, "What's the point in us bidding against Saudi Arabia?".

Anyone that supports the WC in Saudi in any way whatsoever will have blood on their hands. Nothing will happen though, the British government will continue to turn a blind eye since the weapons we sell Saudi are worth billions and the Saudi sponsored bots will continue to spread overwhelmingly popular threads into the media.

I read about this some time ago. Saudi really is barbaric but that's OK with Newcastle fans.

It's difficult wishing ill on a regime when you know millions of people would be affected. You can wish all their oil to dry up, or their new development to bankrupt their entire country, but any ill-feeling towards the regime, that may come to pass, will ultimately impact on millions of innocent people. I guess a freak family yachting accident wouldn't be too much to hope for?

This isn't about Israel though, let's not turn it into a Gaza binfest. Besides Israel is doing it quite openly and haven't to my knowledge tried to sportswash their reputation by pouring billions into sport. Saudi Arabia is a backward medieval despotic country that countries like Britain only entertain all the while.they control the worlds oil supplies.

You need to accept not everyone in the world has the same opinion as liberal Britons. The vast majority of the world doesn’t even believe in democracy or has it. Your and my view is very much a minority one in that respect.

This story was around last week but only got around to reading it in the Observer today.
AS&H Clifford Chance was commissioned to independently assess the human rights implications of the Saudi bid, but the report “contains no substantive discussion of extensive and relevant abuses in Saudi Arabia”, according to a statement released by 11 organisations, including Amnesty International and Human Rights Watch. Under terms agreed between Fifa and the Saudi Arabian Football Federation, AS&H Clifford Chance limited its assessment to only those human rights instruments that Saudi Arabia had ratified and that were deemed to apply “to the hosting and staging” of the World Cup. As a result, it makes no mention of the systemic human rights abuses endured by Saudi citizens and foreign nationals, which include the imprisonment of women’s rights activists and dissidents, severe restrictions on freedom of expression and the execution of at least 200 individuals in the first nine months of 2024.

Agreed. Outside of the Western nations democracy has been absent or at best a passing phase quickly replaced by authoritarian / dictatorship with a side salad of kleptocratic pilfering of the national assets by certain leaders and their pre-approved pilfering associates. That certainly categorises Russia and most of their neighbours as well as many others I could mention.

Saudi is a bit different from most of the others with its absolute ‘monarchy’ allowing MBS to do whatever he wants and of course the way he does it is morally unacceptable. The recent BBC documentary (on iPlayer) about Saudi Arabia and specifically MBS was very revealing about what he is trying to do with the country and why sport, art and this desert city are part of the plan.
