I hope that representations have been made to ensure that the game on this date is going to be an AWAY fixture.

Saturday 10 September is the day that Sussex University will be celebrating its 50th anniversary. All sorts of events are planned - including concerts, films, celebration lunches, literary discussions, sports events and guided strolls around the campus. The University is hoping for thousands of visitors to show up.

I can't see any way that a major event on the campus (with thousands of visitors) can take place at the same time as thousands of Albion fans are hoping to find a car parking space at the same venue.

Presumably SOMEONE has thought about this?

Not a joke, just thousands of each chasing the same parking spaces.

There was an occasion a couple of seasons ago when Brighton University withdrew the facility to use Mithras House car park because of an Open Day. I'm wondering whether Sussex University will close its car park to Albion supporters on 10 September, in the same way.

Isn't the club party line that there isn't any parking next to the stadium anyway (unless you're a club official/disabled)? Surely we've all got the public transport/park and ride mindset by now?

I would have thought so in fact I expect, secretly like, you know they have. But you can't have the Albion all encompassing juggernaut rolling in to town forsaking everything in its path one month and then not being quite so important the next. I can't imagine Derek Allen calling Alan Hardaker up and manipulating Albions entire league season. Oh Hi Alan home game on the 6th August please er ...... oh yes and an away game on the 10th September. Oh yes can we have an away game on the 15th October cos the wife is having a few lunch guests around, and a home game on November 12th November cos I have a few mates coming down. Oh yes and Donny Rovers first game please. And we don't want Stuart Atwell reffing thanks . Thanks Alan.

No. The Club's line is that ALL of the Sussex University car parks will be available for matchday parking. And, because there isn't enough space on the university campus, it's necessary to find some more parking nearby. Hence the current planning application to Lewes District Council to use Bennett's Field.

The football league do ask each club for a list of dates that should be avoided. They range from the Shrewsbury flower festival to party conferences. The question will be if activities that wouldn't have been on the radar previously have now been taken into account.

Q: What happens if the University is holding an open day or admissions day when the football club wants to play a home match?
A: Under the licence agreement between the University and Brighton & Hove Albion, the University would notify the club if it were unable to provide car parking on any of the proposed dates on the club's fixture list. The club would then come up with an alternative date.

Car parking
The club will use some existing parking spaces at the University, in addition to spaces elsewhere in Brighton, on 30 match days per year.

The car parks designated as available for use are the Sportcentre (P5), Sussex House (P4), Biology Road (P3), Science (P1) and Innovation Centre (P2, weekends only) car parks. The designation can be changed by the University. Parking on campus will be subject to a formal management contract between the stadium and the University and one condition in the contract is that appropriate University representatives are part of the team managing travel to and from stadium events.

Other sections of the contract specify that University of Sussex car parks can be used only by fans displaying a windscreen badge to prove that they have pre-booked parking. These will be season-ticket holders or corporate guests only. There will be specific pedestrian routes marked out for fans on campus and they will not be allowed to use any other part of campus. Stewards will manage the arrival and departure of fans from campus.

There is no intention of allowing parking on the University campus other than for strictly specified events or of allowing parking at times when the University is undertaking its normal business.

The type of day-time use envisaged by the club will not involve University parking facilities. The stadium itself will have parking for 150 cars, which should be enough for whatever activities take place during the normal working day.

The football club will pay the University an annual six-figure sum for the use of its car parks during matches and other events.

The university has 1,300 parking spaces on the campus (plus some disabled parking). They are anticipating up to 1,100 spaces being used for matchday parking.

Traffic management

Campus access for up to 1,100 fans' cars on match days will be via the new link road only through Stanmer Park. University access for staff and students on match days will be via Knights Gate Road. There will be stewards at both entry points.

The planning application to Lewes District Council does, however, state that planning permission has already been given to the Club for the use of car parks other than P1 to P5. I appreciate, though, that it is necessary not only to get planning permission, but also to get the agreement of the University to use particular areas for matchday parking.

As far as I'm aware, they've never previously moved Albion home games from normal kick-off times on The Fifth.

Putting everything together ... at least we now now that ALL parking in the vicinity of the stadium (University and Bennett's Field) will be restricted to season ticket holders, corporate guests and hospitality ticket holders, who have pre-booked.
