Could we have a tropical sand laden beach here at Brighton within 100 years-

It seems to me eventually it could stretch as far as the West Pier and perhaps beyond...

Long shore drift normally goes from west to east as you can see from the build up behind the grounds on the beaches, so no.

By the seaside in West Somerset
surely Brighton already does have a sandy beach along its full length - its just beyond the tide line :)

Used have plenty of sand when I was a kid. When the tide went out, you could pretty much walk out to the end of the pier.

But then they built the Marina.

it's an interesting picture though, just shows what effect the marina has had so far-perhaps,perhaps not.

That whole pic looks like it has been jazzed up for some developer's plan. Every aerial photo I have seen shows the drift going in the opposite direction. Perhaps this pic was taken after a run of easterlies?

Think it might take more than a hundred years to mash all that shingle down to sand grains too.

It clearly has been jazzed up because there are several buildings that don't exist. Thunk you're right about the easterlies though.

I think Notters is correct with the West/East drift-to me i would expect the sand to be at the West arm but it's in actual fact following around and settling in the Eastern section-maybe Rottingdean will be the lucky ones

What sand are we talking about, looks like chalk clouding the water white to me.

But if you go down at low tide at the eastern arm you will see it's not chalk but sand and it is sand laden with jewels-

If you like fishing you need never visit a fishing tackle shop again,it's littered with lost hooks, weights etc.

doesn't that pic show the exact opposite to that though...???

It appears that way but it is forming up on the East side more-thus is going from West to settle in the East
