Regardless of salaries most businesses will be in this position when top talent leaves and it is reasonably common practice. Looking at it another way, it protects/mitigates the loss of the club knoweldge and info to a potential competitor. It can also serve as leverage if you want to negotitate a buy-out of the contract. I'm sure the club will have factored the potential for gardening leave into the full cost of Jewell's employment so they will not have lost....as you put it.

Why would they do that? Max would normally be a buyout of his notice period - ie salary for the period. Would be genuinely staggered if his salary was anywhere near that number.

I think you need to look at the bigger picture. Even if this financial "lose, lose" scenario of your plays out, think how much we are in the black because of the Potter and staff deal and our overall player transfer deals.

Forget the money, we're making plenty overall. Just concentrate on what is right for the club now, and that means putting Jewell on gardening leave.

I think Chelsea are taking a risk hiring a guy they can't use until November when they could be hit with a transfer embargo and / or points deduction that will affect their summer window.

Of course. People are headhunted in every industry. But at what point do you start to think you're in the right place? I've been in the position myself where I could have gone to bigger outfits for more money, but other considerations including work/life balance, corporate culture etc, and simply being somewhere that I enjoyed working, kept me where I was. In football, of course, the imperatives may be different from the point of view of the 'corporate' objectives but the other considerations are the same.

Would you really, really see Chelsea as a better employment prospect than Brighton right now? Their main attraction seems to be 'we'll give you a shit-load more money to come here, and if it doesn't work out and we bin you in a panic clear-out in a few months, we'll give you a shit-load of money to go away.'

Out of all of the players and staff that have moved from Brighton to Chelsea over the last year or two, who has improved their football career? Yes, they've made more money, but their careers have either flatlined or tanked. Whereas Lamptey and Gilmour have improved their reputations by what they've done at Brighton.

With MOTD and other salivating every week about what a well run club Brighton is and how they play great football, perhaps that will count for more than money to some. Or maybe not.

Would absolutely LOVE Liverpool to thrash Chelsea next Sunday, and see Chelsea exit the FA Cup and finish outside the European spots in the league, so they don't get the extra fillip of European revenue next season (would have much preferred Palace to beat them last week, as I don't think there is any chance of Palace going down this season).
