Heard the new version this morning by Jamelia, load of crap.

The gorgeous Sam Brown took it to number 4 in February 1989. Now living in remote Scotland with 2 young daughters, Sam has gone brunette and is obviously a bit older, but still has a brilliant voice and tours small venues.

Here is the chart from that date; some great classics in it:

Top 40 Hits of Late February 1989
1 Simple Minds Belfast Child
2 Michael Ball Love Changes Everything
3 Michael Jackson Leave Me Alone
4 Sam Brown Stop
5 Marc Almond featuring Gene Pitney Something's Gotten Hold Of My Heart
6 Bobby Brown My Prerogative
7 Bananarama & Lananeeneenoonoo Help!
8 S-Express Hey Music Lover

14 Gloria Estefan & Miami Sound Machine Can't Stay Away From You
15 Hue & Cry Looking For Linda
16 Poison Every Rose Has Its Thorn
17 Roy Orbison You Got It
18 Def Leppard Rocket
19 Jason Donovan Too Many Broken Hearts
20 Robert Howard & Kym Mazelle Wait!
21 Ten City That's The Way Love Is
22 Tyree featuring Kool Rock Steady Turn Up The Bass

My god what a great chart. Including the wonderful Wild Thing by Tone Loc. I loved that tune at the time.

And some real shit as well. Michael Ball? Rick Astley? Jason Donovan? Absolutely terrible, in every way.

The best song there is Leave Me Alone, by Wacko, IMHO.

I remember that Smash Hits printed the lyrics for Wages Day by Deacon Blue (35) and wrote 'on a wages day, sex sex sex sex'.

A week later they had to apologise and point out that it was actually 'say say say say'. Wishful thinking I suppose.

The Reynolds Girls, what a classic

"I'd rather Jack than Fleetwood Mac"

This is all the info I could find out about them:

Q: "Did the Reynolds Girls record anything else apart from "I'd Rather Jack" at PWL? This is one of my favourite tracks and I'd love to know if there is anything else by them that I have missed!"

A: The Reynolds Girls only recorded "I'd Rather Jack" at PWL. According to the studio documentation I have seen, there wasn't any contract drawn up between themselves and Stock, Aitken & Waterman - it was just a one-off project. Shedules just say that the girls were booked into the studio to record a single with S/A/W - and the result was the highly infectious "I'd Rather Jack". The Reynolds Girls did appear on some of Pete Waterman's successful 'Hitman Roadshows' alongside acts like Jason Donovan, Sinitta and Sonia, however it appears that the two sisters pretty much kept themselves to themselves. After their Number 8 hit had left the charts, the sisters set up their own record company (Reynotone) and attempted to issue a single themselves with their father acting as their manager.

Who gives the f*** whether the charts mean anything anyway, do they dictate what you listen to?

To be honest, no.

The charts now are virtually meaningless. In these days, records sold 100,000 copies to get to number one.

This chart serves as a great memory prompter.

No, I think you will find the internet has changed the charts these days, people now prefer to buy albums rather than a single.

Even then you can down-load albums for what a cd is actually worth rathen £15.99 or whatever they cost now!

This was for me, the beginning of the end for the charts.

Dep Mode is the best song here - BTW it's the live version taken from the 101 album recorded at the Pasedena Rose Rowl (no, not Hampshire County Cricket ground).

Used to like TSC but promised land was their last single, a poor cover of a poorer song.
