If the police gather evidence in an illegal raid on a house there is every possibility that the evidence could become inadmissable in court.

I think life imprisonment would be a better idea. Even those sections of the fundamentalist Islamists who didn't support Saddam will now be able to use him as a martyr to further their cause.
