2 days ago they reported Ukraine was still 30km from Russian nuclear power plant at at Kursk, a few hours ago it was reported there was explosions right by it, now multiple reports Ukraine is at the NPP and its being shut down!

Russia as a country has always regarded its citizens as expendable. Because of this they regard Ukrainians as expendable too. The behaviour of the first waves of allegedly well trained soldiers towards civilians and prisoners was despicable and often a War Crime. Do the Russian authorities care ? No. Does the huge majority of the Russian population care ? No.While it is a military win for Ukraine in terms of pushing back against incursions in other parts of Ukraine (and note with appreciation your qualifying comments about the dead) these scenes of piles of dead young Russian men are frankly tragic and breaks my humanitarian heart - Putin is an absolute **** for propagating the belief in these kids that the War on Ukraine is justified or if that fails, making them serve under the threat of execution if they don’t follow orders.

But, as you say, the majority of Russians do not care at all about what they've done to Ukraine, or to anyone else.

David Axe of Forbes sees this as a high risk strategy by Ukraine.
He speculates that the plan may be to stretch Russian troops, exploit the resultant weaknesses, and/or do a land grab for a chunk of western Russia to use in a later trade in some future negotiation. OK. The problem I have with this analysis, is how taking the NPP fits in with this. Because it doesn't. It tells me that the plan is a bit more than nuanced than we suspect. Will the lights go out? Give Russia a taste of its own medicine?
Konstantin Samoilov details the madness. The chaos. The headless chickens in Russia right now. The lies being communicated by the Kremlin. The insanity of Maria Zakharova appealing to the international community. A few days ago, I saw coverage of Margarita Simonyan, Head of RT and the top propagandist, devoting a day to prayer, along with her husband. Yes, they are appealing to God. The top man.
It's miscalculation after miscalculation.
I think Ukraine's strategy is to deliberately cause this mayhem. Poke the bear. The first manifestation of this is a spectacular success in wiping out 14 trucks of troops.
There is no point in trying to speculate what will happen next. I have no idea. I might be right by some chance, or more likely, hopelessly wrong.
But a while ago, I suggested that as Russia steadily fails to win the war, and the money continues to run out, we should expect some strange things happening in Russia.

It used to be Russia that were masters of asymmetric warfare. Since the "invasion "of Crimea and the subsequent Russian annexations of Ukrainian territory the Ukrainians have learned some hard lessons. Now its payback time. Russia has to move forces to try to halt the advances in the Kursk region. These forces will have to come from the SE front and will be in range of HIMARS and ATACMS and possibly partisan actions..all the time they are moving they are not fighting but can be attacked. When moved their withdrawal weakens the SE front and possibly opens up the option for reclaiming the Crimea. Russia has to expend lots of fuel ( remember the attacks on refineries ) and put even more strain on their remaining rolling stock. Ukraine asking lots of questions and Russia has no answers.
Not too dissimilar to the dying days of the Nazis, when kids were being into battle because that's all Hitler had left.

Good NSC war thread common sense Raymondo. They are not fighting, and not dug in, in their trenches either. Rather than having to crowbar them out of their positions, it is easier to get them by the truckload.
A question for the floor: do you think we should rename the thread 'Ukraine invades Russia'?
