Quite apart from their aggressive attack on Ukraine, which is a massive reason for banning them anyway, they still haven't conformed fully to anti drugs requirements and should not have been anywhere near Tokyo.Russia's answer to the Olympics: a fist fight in a local park and some dodgy fashion

A good piece again from Rosenberg: tells it how it is, uses some tongue in cheek humour, and he's still allowed to stay in MoscowRussia's answer to the Olympics: a fist fight in a local park and some dodgy fashion

That is very interesting thanks...and a reminder to me that it is never the end of history.Quite a long read. But this item in our Estonian news today gives a little insight to the background of how the Soviets and now Russia think about their neighbours
Olaf Mertelsmann: Soviet national policy continues to impact Ukraine
To better understand national politics in Ukraine, one must look further back into the past, even before World War I, writes Olaf Mertelsmann in a commentary originally published in the journal Universitas Tartuensis.news.err.ee
Thanks for posting - very interesting though I think it underplays Russia’s policy of starvation in Ukraine in the 1930sQuite a long read. But this item in our Estonian news today gives a little insight to the background of how the Soviets and now Russia think about their neighbours

That is an interesting case, I get the part about continuing to provide content for a sanctioned company, but the book that criticises Estonia though, is that treason? In today's news
Prosecution in Estonia charges journalist who wrote for Russian media with treason
The Public Prosecutor's Office accuses Estonian citizen journalist Svetlana Burceva (57) of violating international sanctions and treason.news.err.ee
I was also surprised. But Estonia has been extremely outspoken against Russia since the Ukraine invasionThat is an interesting case, I get the part about continuing to provide content for a sanctioned company, but the book that criticises Estonia though, is that treason?
It seems like something Russia would charge a critical citizen with, Estonia has a good reputation as far as press freedom and security go.
There’s speculation that their target might be a gas supply hub.A small incursion to stretch the Russians https://www.theguardian.com/world/a...tm_source=esp&utm_medium=Email&CMP=GTUK_email

No mate. An incursion sure, but not a small incursion. It's the largest amount of land gained in an offensive, since Ukraine kicked Russia out of Kharkiv region at end of 2022.A small incursion to stretch the Russians https://www.theguardian.com/world/a...tm_source=esp&utm_medium=Email&CMP=GTUK_email
Really interesting. Thanks for chasing down more detailNo mate. An incursion sure, but not a small incursion. It's the largest amount of land gained in an offensive, since Ukraine kicked Russia out of Kharkiv region at end of 2022.
This is a stunning raid, thats much bigger than those before using the Free Russian legion, its using highly trained Ukrainian units and ties Putin up in all sorts of knots. And will allow Ukraine open season on Russian logistics lines trying to move equipment and troops to defend the region. Russian X channels are freaking out!
Couple of really good X threads. Using thread unwrapped.
Mick Ryan former head of Australian armed forces speculating potential strategic objectives and Trent Telenko with some truly excellent insights.

Yeah Jury's out on Motivation, but warinthefuture advances a few good theories. Thanks @Peter Ward, much appreciated.
It wasn't an easy read, but I think I get it. Not sure what the real target is though
Yeah Jury's out on Motivation, but warinthefuture advances a few good theories.
Undermines the US escalation management theorists, I'd hazard a guess its to both target the troop and weapons movements within Ukraine that will be pulled to defend the region, and then potentially try and exploit any weak areas.
The "strengthening hand in negotiations" argument also looks a good shout?
Whatever the reason this is bigger and more advanced than anything that came before, though you'd guess Ukraine may have difficulty expanding too far or holding too much territory in longer term?
From what I’ve read the Ukrainians are still pushing forward. And yet I thought Russia had said it’s all under control! Have to admire (again) the bravery and ingenuity of the Ukrainians.Yeah Jury's out on Motivation, but warinthefuture advances a few good theories.
