Bloomberg report that Ukrainian drones have hit a Russian strategic bomber in the far north in the Kola peninsula near Murmansk in the arctic.

Is nothing safe in Russia from Ukrainian drones these days?
So, given the distance from Ukraine, the drones would have been launched from within Russia?

That is one scenario. The distance is 3000 km. A while ago, @raymondo pointed out there were many Ukrainians living in Russia. I googled it to find the 2015 Russian census puts the number at 5.8 million, or 4% of the total Russian Federation. That's around the same as Scotland or Norway.

Talking of Norway, we also mustn't forget that there are several Nato countries nearer to Murmansk than Ukraine.

Update: (nobody told me to measure distance in a straight line):

Surely this is an obvious way for the west to go then? For the price of (e.g.) one Abrams tank (including fuel, maintenance and training) you could produce an absolute shedload of drones?

I think they're starting to move that way. I read a couple of weeks ago that a consortium of European countries were funding and/or planning to build drones for Ukraine.

And war is going to move away from large expensive manned assets and move towards large numbers of smaller and soon enough AI assisted drones.

The bad news about this is that China are best placed to produce these at scale

Thanks that’s interesting. As you say, some NATO members are nearer to Murmansk than Ukraine though I’m not sure they would stage/host such an attack currently. Which means, if launched from Ukraine, the drones would have travelled undetected across Russia for several hundred miles. More likely in my view, they were launched within Russia. Either way it must be worrying for Putin that it’s yet another reminder that Ukraine has such reach.
