No idea about specific targeting, but they're definitly reported Ukrainian sabotage groups inside Russia (under Buhdanov) and I'd guess they're smuggling drones in and firing them from somewhere nearer refinery.One reply says one refinery is 730 miles from the Ukrainian border...just wow.
And, somebody help me here because I'm no engineer, I assume the drone operators need to know the exact target within the refinery? or is it easyanywhere will do?
You'd guess? they will do covert info gathering ops, stake the places out, work out somewhere relatively near and safe to fire from, then their escape plans away from area? and then fire them.
They'll be executed if caught.
Yes, local sabotage groups makes more sense; and, as you say, incredibly brave work.

"I read somewhere..." is still a jolly good way of learningRegarding the distance, I read somewhere that the Samara region is nearer to Kazakhstan than Ukraine. I also read somewhere that 'Russians' were suspected of operating the drones, on behalf of Ukraine. (No idea if that is true, or likely, or neither).
Regarding the exact target within the refinery, I saw a tweet that suggested that an earlier attack had hit the most important part of the refinery which, upon googling it, appears to be:
'The Crude Unit is the Primary Processing Unit in an Oil Refinery where in Crude Oil is separated into various products depending on the relative volatility of the Hydrocarbon components.'
P.S. Apologies for the multiple 'I read somewhere' sources of info, but that is what it's like. I read a lot and then forget where I saw it.
.Here we go... the Crude unit is the big oblong shiny thing, full of various oils and gases being distilled off. Not too hard to hit for a drone that's got through any defences.

I'm pretty sure it's that distillation tower that's the prize, but if the furnace goes up as well, job's a good'un.

Yes you need to know what bits to hit for maximum effect, but thanks to google maps satellite view and a basic knowledge of refining it’s easy to Identify & target the more critical bits of the plant, ideally the more combustible parts of the plant post crude oil distillation columns which are easy target.One reply says one refinery is 730 miles from the Ukrainian border...just wow

An ad on Russian TV encouraging good citizen behavior. As per our babushka there are other similar ads threatening loss of pension, loss of rights to hospital treatment etc.

That's the combined team effort of the Russian propaganda subject matter experts - getting ordinary Russians in state TV land to think their genocidal leaders have really got a great sense of humour and want them all to cast their pointless votes with no trousers on.
