I am making an assumption that there’s a process to go through, opposition to be countered and agreement to be won before changes are ratified.

If they can't sustain the war effort because their economy has collapsed, they'll have to withdraw. When that happens, Ukraine get their land back. It can then be a prerequisite for Russia to end their claim in order for sanctions to be removed, which would be a no brainer for them.

Let's not fall for Russian propaganda - 'oh, sorry, we can't legally let Ukraine have that land which is Russian' etc.

Would you believe the exchange rate is now 1 dollar = 87.70 rubles. WTF?

Yes I would. As soon as Trump started supporting Putin, blamed Ukraine for the starting the war, and refusing to call Russia the aggressor, it started to change. It's looked like sanctions will be reduced, which would mean a strengthening ruble. Now if the US switches and says Putin doesn't want peace, and sanctions are to remain, and the US will continue to supply arms to Ukraine, then I'd expect the ruble to fall again.

It's all up in the air at the moment, we have an important couple of weeks coming up.

If. That’s one potential scenario.
My original comment related to the Russian mindset, in relation to the current position. Changing the constitution is a clear step in trying to formalise/normalise the planned annexation.

I say this with respect, you really don’t need to lecture me on that.

I didn't see that coming ! Especially after the reports after the US-Russia talks.

I'm guessing, but maybe the intransigence of the Russians did it for them. Perhaps they didn't read the room.
He sent in the floppy, useless negotiators, Russia played hardball and gave nothing, forgetting he held the Trump card of sanctions.
Oh well, mustn't get too excited, it'll possibly all change tomorrow.

is that set in stone or can that be negotiated away?

Well it's definitely not set in stone. It's a nice start though. I imagine we'll learn more in the next couple of weeks, after we hear Trump's reaction to Ukraine signing/not signing 'the deal', and how Starmer's visit goes.

Yeah I don't think Russia will give up the land unless they're collapsing.

I'm not trying to lecture, but I think it's worth us all keeping it (their propaganda) at the front of our minds.

I agree, Trig...but please don't bomb our Babushka's village 😬.
I was going to post this anyway:
Granny Raymondo is about 25 miles inside occupied Zaporizhzhia. Per today's phone call with Mrs Raymondo, in the past couple of months the Russians have reopened a small scale iron ore (we think) mine just outside the village. It had been closed years ago as uneconomic. Local men and women have taken jobs there (voluntary, paid) as there's little work until the growing, harvesting restarts.
Probably the local commander wants to keep his conscripts busy.
Granny has been told the ore is taken to Russia (I thought it was already Russia 😉). I imagine this is happening on many small scales all across the occupied territories, and probably on a very large scale in Donbas.
Anyway #don'tbombgranny 👍
If she starts reclaiming land for Ukraine, would that be a granny annexe?

That makes good sense. It's the sort of post I would have liked to have posted, but unfortunately, none of it occurred to me.

I don't think a ceasefire serves Ukraine's long term interests at this time. The best thing they can do (imho) is to protect their people whilst building up military strength and continuing to bleed the Russian army and economy. Do this and Russia will be incapable of carrying on the war in the near future and have to withdraw.
That works for me. Pootin has no respect for life and there have to be consequences for his rogue nation.
