[Travel] Runway closed at Gatwick - now reopened

Anyone expecting an arrival or leaving this evening might want to check before setting out.

Gatwick Airport says it has had to close its runway due to a broken-down aircraft.

A statement from the airport said it is "due to a departing aircraft having hot brakes".

not helpfull if you only have one runway

I heard it's the busiest airport in the world with 1 runway, can any plane nerds confirm this?

Sort of but it does have 2 runways. They are too close together to use at the same time. One, the northern one is used for as a taxiway.

I'll add I'm not a nerd I was an aircraft engineer for BCal and BA at LGW

Hardly news - I'm already scheduled to take off from Seville in 1 hr 58m late. I presume 2hrs is the compo cut off.

Edit: just shifted to 1hr 55m late. Presume still flying to Gatwick, but

My friend is trying to fly to Scotland, says it’s absolute chaos, nobody to talk to because everything is automated and not enough seating so they (family of four with two young children) are sitting on the floor

When I have to travel on business, I try to avoid flying through Gatwick where I can as it is so focused on retail and not the passenger experience. Had to use the North terminal last week and even at 6am, there were very few spare seats around.

Much prefer Heathrow T5 or T2 these days. City is also good but can be pain to get to/from at certain times of the day.

It's set up like a small local airport, when it's the busiest single runway airport.

I had heard the same but then it was overtaken by Kandahar Airport at height of Afghan War

It's possible to be both an aircraft engineer, and an avgeek you know!
