Anyone else spot where it says Euro in really small letters on the 50p piece ?

Don't, you just KNOW Gilligan and the Standard will run with that kind of headline tomorrow.

"Ken with his hands in the Mint"

"Boris promises traditional, saxon-based coins"

What's wrong with the coins we've already got?? Have they not got anything better to spend their money on?

Money doesn't cost anything to produce. If it did it would be stuck in an infinite loop of being bought and sold and would never leave the mint.

Historically money can only be traded with sand, which is the reason why the Saudi Arabian countries are so wealthy.

In actually fact, I understand our Government has to pay them to take the sand back. That's the real scandal.

IN the last 40 years?

I am 27 and in my life time im sure there has been a new 5p, 10p, £2 introduced

I was only quoting the MSN money website:
"The Royal Mint has unveiled the first new designs for Britain's coins since decimalisation nearly 40 years ago. The Mint commissioned new "reverse" designs for the 1p, 2p, 5p, 10p, 20p, 50p and £1 coins that feature the shield of the royal arms to partner the Queen's head on the flip side. Here's a first look at the changes to your change."

I guess my thread title was a bit misleading, I did mean to say new coin DESIGNS rather than just new coins. My bad :dunce:

What about what it's made out of?? The costs of production in terms of labour and all your overhead costs?? Then the advertising of the new money and taking old money out of circulation?? Not to mention the design of the new coins by some arty type who has been paid a fortune to do something my 7 year old niece could have done?

The labour is free.

One of the major cover ups of the last ten years was when the gorilla enclosure was closed at London Zoo.

I went there last year with my wife to see the gorillas and was greeted with the sign, "we have no gorillas until 2008 whilst the new gorilla enclosure is constucted, have you considered the giraffes? "

Something fishy I thought, they were obviously using the gorillas to build the new enclosure to save money. Well as it turns out, not only did they rebuild the gorilla enclosure but they moved Royal Mint in there as well ! The security has been handed over to the Meerkats although everyone thought the Rhinos would get it.

As for the new designs, they do look like something a gorilla could have done.

so they are updating the image of all the coins except the £2 coin??? why not do that too?

They said the coin is too new to warrant having a makeover.

which is utter gash. as well as new 5p, 10p, £2 coins mentioned we've also had the 20p and £1 introduced in the 80's and new 50p. the designs on the £1 and 50p seem to be updated every year or two.

so really what they meant, if they had bothered to research it properly, is that the first changes to the 1p and 2p coins since decimalisation.
