Rotherham Chairman throws his toys out of the pram after they we confirmed to be playing league 2 football next season...

Rotherham United chairman Dennis Coleman has criticised the Football League in the wake of the Millers relegation from League One.

Coleman told BBC Radio Sheffield: "We have been up against it since we were docked 10 points at the start of the season for financial shortcomings.

"It is time for the Football League to re-look at what they've done.

"It is nothing to do with this board or team why the club was in trouble and they've punished us - it's a disgrace."

Pathetic

Do you blame him, I certainly don't, they have been punished for the poor running of the club by the former board.

What if the league had imposed a points deduction on us in the 97/98 season because we had no ground and our finances were more than a little iffy, we would have gone out of the league instead of Donny Rovers and would in most likelehood no longer exist.

Rotherham were doing ok and beating the drop before January. It was selling their two strikers for £1.2 million that did for them.

I have a lot of sympathy for Rotherham, stiffed badly but at the end of the day it is dog eat dog and we were very lucky a while ago the rules were different.

Had they been what they are now - conference.

I still don't see how punishing a club for dodgy finances through points deduction is an effective means of punishment. It has nothing to do with on field activity if the finances of a previous board have screwed you over.

Probably out of buisness by now as well.

What a crock of shit. A ten point deduction for going into administration is fair enough. Sure it's not fair to that particular chairman (except that he knew the score before he took over), but it is fair to the other 23 clubs and their fans who do stay within their financial limitations and it acts as another motivation to ensure creditors are treated properly.

It should have been brought in before Leicester absolutely took the piss out of their creditors not so long ago - if Leeds stayed up, my disappointed would certainly be minimised if it was at Leicester's expense.

Agree, There was an out cry on here about Leciester and for something to be done after what happened a year ago - is there one now about Rotherham because it has happened to a small club? would the reaction of "this isnt fair" be the same if it happened to a bigger club? doubt it.

Rotherham would still be in trouble with the 10 points.

19 Cheltenham 43 -13 50
20 Leyton Orient 43 -14 48
21 Bradford 43 -13 46
22 Chesterfield 43 -9 44
23 Rotherham 43 -12 38
24 Brentford 43 -35 34

Did we actually go into administration though? If iffy finances were enough to get points deducted then about two-thirds of the league would have points lopped off.

It's all very well him saying it's nothing to do with the current players or board, but if punishments were only dished out according to who ran the club at the time, they could go out, spend way beyond their means, run up huge debts then escape both financial ruin and punishment by changing the chairman and saying "nowt to do with me guv".

Besides, it's well documented that Rotherham deliberately ensured they only went into administration AFTER the end of last season to avoid points deduction and certain relegation then. They were hoping that with a whole season ahead this time around, they'd at least have a chance of survival even with a minus ten point start.

So no sympathy from me (especially when they sold their two best players half way through).

It happened to Wrexham and now they could go out of the league altogether, the rules are there and they knew them at the start of the season.

Harsh on us, although I'm biased.
The ex-chairman (a loony property developer) ran up debts as he wanted to close us down - then he could bulldoze the ground, sell it for a massive profit.

Going into admin was the ONLY step left to us to force control of the club off him.

The FA and FL 'rules' aren't there to protect clubs, they protect the status quo.

Yorkie and Edna have hit the nail on the head.

When they sold Will Hoskins, they had an outside chance of making the play-offs.

it was alan knill winning manager of the month for november that did it - only won one game under him since that!

at the end of the day the points deduction hasn't helped, but the side were out of the drop zone and blew it

I see the Torquay Chairman has also decided enough is enough and they are all up for sale ( including the club)

Well actually they are there to protect the interests of all the other clubs in the league. The problem is that you can't really deviate from the rules for anyone, otherwise every club is going to have a sob story when it runs into financial trouble. I do sympathise with the average supporter, mind. I think we all do.
