After reading a few threads about the crap atmosphere at the Amex on Sunday - WTF are people expecting. I did a good few years at the Goldstone from mid eighties onwards an in all honesty bar a few game sthe atmosphere there was never that good.

What are people expecting a wall of noise similar to the Kop at Anfield back in their glory days........ f***ing hell what are people expecting they really do have some memories through those rose tinted specs.

I repeat... It sounded great on the radio!

Forgive me if I'm wrong but I don't ever recall The Goldstone ever truly rocking?

I have no idea why peoples expectations are so high?

As long as the majority of fans are enjoying The Amex experience, that's all that matters IMO.

I'm sure someone will attempt to correct my ever fading memory of the good old Goldstone days!

The Goldstone was pretty quiet a lot of the time, especially with no roof in the North stand early 80's

My memories where a bit of noise just before kick off In the Norrth stand, two or three renditions a half of GOSBTS, Albion and the Palace hating song. Seagulls everytime we got a corner. Kids squealing in the South stand and a prodominantly morgue like West stand.

Totally agree with this. Goldstone atmosphere was worse than the AMEX was yesterday on about 95% of the occasions.

Anyone who doesn't think the atmosphere at the AMEX is great is a nutter.

A friend of mine who is a Man Utd fan went yesterday for the first time and couldn't believe how good it was.

People need to get a sense of proportion. Or some ears!!!!!!

It was pretty poor most of the time apart from the odd rendition of Eastbourner's La La La  and with no roof even worse.

It was fantastic in the glory years at times. But i don't think it could rival the Amex. I've been to premier matches (not as a fan) and none have had as good an atmosphere as ours.

I was lucky enough to be a regular at the Goldstone from '72 onwards and there were some occasions when the atmosphere was immense, especially when the crowds exceeded 30,000, but overall the Amex wins hands down.

Sometimes it was 'Ooooooo it's a corner, Ooooo it's a corner!'

So far the amex is much better than the goldstone but then its nearly a full house every game.
A full house at the goldstone derby, palace and rochdale evening games come to mind with 33,000 plus it was electric!
The amex won't ever have that big game feel because the crowd size is pretty stable at the moment!
On a game by game yes better than goldstone but the goldstone was a living beast and could be different every game!
Thats what made it exciting not knowing who or how many would greet you as you entered the beast!:moo:

Level of noise depends what is happening on the pitch. At every ground, since football began.

How can people expect an average performance against Barnsley and getting a 2-0 win to generate as much noise as say for example: A last game of the season against Palace that gets us promoted and them relegated. After we had been reduced to nine men(One of the Reds given to our keeper and Gus didn't name a sub keeper so Noone has to go between the sticks.) in the first half and been two nil down, to come back and win 5-2?

Do you normally have problems with getting a grip of reality?

See: Leeds getting battered at home a few weeks ago, to see why you are wrong.

There ar esome clubs who have fans who really get being the home sid e- not that many though i can thinkof Stoke, Pompey, Leeds, Liverpool other than that consitent good atmospheres from home fans can be lacking up and down the whole country.

I used to live in Liverpool and in my experience the Anfield crowd were very quiet. I think years of success adversely affected the atmosphere. They only seemed to wake up when they scored or played Man U.

At rhe Goldstone - there were some right boring old moaning gits on the East Terrace, and the cigar clouded fat cats in the West just mumbled and seemed to be there to talk about their crappy antique or used-car dealing upmanships. The South was alright sometimes, although a bit quieter than the North Stand.

Too right about the AmEx though - it's a heaven compared to anything we've ever had before. Predictable that many would run it down anyway though. They could even extol the Withdean years romatically if you let them.

Everyone loves to talk about the amazing runs of Wardy, or the impossible saving tackles of Lawrenson - but I recall matches where Wardy was anonymous and barely got the ball, then the dire times when he sat on the bench and that Maybank lumberer was lolling about losing the ball to any defender who wanted it.
That was under Mullery, who blotted his earlier copybook, then even went to manage the filth

On the contrary. You have proved my point perfectly.

It matters what is happening on the pitch. Leeds were getting battered and that is why the noise level increased. If they were losing 1-0 they would have been mumbling, but 5-0 that hurts. Leeds are doing alright this season they would not have been singing if they were in the bottom three.

Another couple of examples where a battering can inspire you to sing:
1) Portsmouth V Arsenal a few years back.
2) More importantly Brighton V Sheff Wed 1990/91. They thumped us 4-0 out the Goldstone. I am a Johnny Leaves Early, but I stayed a full ten minutes after the game had finished and along with the other few hundred north standers sang 'We're gonna win the League' non stop until all the Sheff Wednesday fans had gone.
