Studying politics at the moment...I am VERY concerned at what I am reading and noticing a few "Paulites" in this forum at the moment (or at most, sympathisers).

Civil rights laws are not spot on but his economic agenda is one to take note. Nonetheless, he is still as much of a nut job as Santourm, Romney and Gingrich.

Besides, Obama will win hands down.

Studying politics eh?

I studied politics, and psychology. Using the word "paulites" and "sympathisers" is a (conscious or unconscious) way to present a point of view without any intellectual substance whatsoever. If you want to be concerned about contemporary political discourse you need look no further than your own post.

Haha, are you a republican then?

Personally, I could not care about the Republicans however, seeing as I have to know about them I can provide you my point of view about Ron Paul having been looking closely at the Republican primaries since it began (of course I do not want to bore the majority of NSC)

He does have a chance of winning. He needs a plurality of delegates in 5+ states to be eligible to have his name put forward as nominee. I think he already has a plurality in 5+ states at the moment.

The other thing that needs to happen is Mitt Romney needs to fail to get 1,144 votes on the first ballot. Some delegates are tied to Mitt Romney so even if they support Ron Paul they have to vote for Mitt Romney.

Romney has not yet reached 1,144 bound delegates, and a lot of the delegates being apportioned to him by the media are based on the straw poll %s he got. What is actually happening is Ron Paul supporters are taking over conventions across the country.

For example in Nevada. The media has Ron Paul down as having 8 delegates, to Mitt Rooney's 20, worked out proportionately in line with the straw vote. In reality, at the Nevada convention held over this past weekend, Ron Paul supporters took 22/25 of the available delegate slots.

In the event Romney does not reach 1,144 bound delegates, the convention will move to a second vote. At that point all delegates become unbound and can vote for whomever they choose. The majority of delegates at the convention may well be Ron Paul supporters waiting for a 2nd ballot.

While this is theoretically true, it won't happen and the shitstorm if somehow a guy who got around 5% of the vote becomes nominee over the choice of the voters would almost certainly mean the GOP declaring the vote null and void and proceeding with Romney as nominee. And while that still sounds fun, in reality the nomination at the convention will be an acclamation of Romney. Ron Paul won't make much noise at all because it would severely damage the prospects of his son who has a serious chance of being on a Republican ticket at some point (perhaps even this one).

You obviously don't understand the process if you thing the RNC can just say, nah sorry we don't like the outcome. The delegates are voters. Voters who took part in the process. Reagan won in a similar way when he ran against Ford and he was treated like shit by his party just like Paul is.

He does not work in terms of quid pro quos or maneuvering to get some kind of concessions, you obviously don't know much about what you are talking about. The media have speculated in a similar way, maybe that is where you read these things, but if you trust the mainstream media you need your head examined.

Most amusing moment of the Republican leadership contest :-

Callista Gingrich on TV “Ladies and Gentlemen I’d like to introduce you to Newt Gingrich, the next President of the United States”

……………….in your dreams darling!

And yes, Obama will win hands down

Yeah, "republicans" vs "democrats", "reds" vs "blues", "coke" vs "pepsi", that is old skool. That is made up bs, the two sides be they republicans/democrats in the US or labour/conservative here, they are two sides of the same coin. There is no difference between the political parties, nor should there be according to the establishment.

That is kind of the whole point of the Ron Paul movement. The people realize that the game is rigged. That politicians are bought and paid for.

Ron Paul is not for sale, that is why he is so popular.

I don't think you need to talk down like that, and your description of delegates as voters is incredibly disingenuous.

I understand the process, but I also understand how powerful the GOP establishment is. In the (incredibly unlikely) event that Paul steals the nomination this way, the "mainstream" Republicans would probably flip out, the right wing media like FOX would go into a rage, and the party would tear itself apart as the national organization (run by Romney supporting types) split with the state organizations (which Paul has basically taken control of in several areas) and made things messy. There'd probably be at least one anti-Paul Republican running independent or third party, and Obama would be laughing his ass off at the impending easy victory (though in the long term, it would open up a lot of formerly safe Democratic demographics to Republican/Paul Republican competition).

At the moment, there are enough Paul delegates to make a loud heckle, but no more. Romney will be nominated by acclamation, there will be no floor vote. What is far more important is that the paultards may be able to influence policy decisions, and they are taking over the GO apparatus at state level which will have big implications in the future.

"paultards" - Clearly you bring no prejudice to the table then.

Some of what you say may be true to point, but your clear prejudice and suggestion of manouvering for concessions demonstrates that you don't know what you are talking about. I wasn't talking down.

My talk of delegates was not disingenuous at all, you just don't understand the process, or you "understand" it like the media and talking heads understand it. You say, "at the moment there are enough Paul delegates to make a loud heckle", where are you getting your delegate numbers from?

Must of missed last years post! I've been an admirer of Dr Paul for a little while now, it's interesting watching him gatecrash the Republican ticket by the back door, very clever move indeed attempting to pinch Mits delegates! Could be an interesting few months!

It's awesome to watch, shame more people havent caught on yet.

If you're interested there maybe some interesting developments tonight according to one journalist who actually reports the news, check it out:

Improve Your Experience | Facebook

"Reality Check tonight, I respond to the blog "Ben Swann got it wrong on Rule 38 and unbound delegates"
Some good points were brought up in that blog... which allows me to sharpen the argument. Share this page today because tonight (will post link after the show) I have something remarkable to share"

Afew other reasons things could get interesting is the RNC are now fully supporting Romney and their campaigns have combined, which is actually against RNC rules (rule 11 I think).

You have just lost all credibility! Ben Swann is well known as a Fox Republican shill!

I read your previous posts with interest but you've now exposed yourself with your bias.
I love open debate but not your brand of indoctrination!

How is Paul's views on civil rights laws not spot on? What's wrong with a live and let live policy where people have the freedom to do as they please so long as they do not violate the rights of others? Why can't that be the guiding principle of all laws?? However, How congressman Paul wants to "provide'/protect individual rights is a bit strange since he opposes incorporation

Different opinions regarding big/small government, federalism, fiscal policy, foreign policy... They all have their flaws and virtues, which is better can be debated until the end of time. Civil rights is universal

dingodan, what is your educational background? A couple of CSEs (woodwork and media studies) from King's Manor? emeritus professor of Psephology at Yale? Why would you want to raise the issue of Ron Paul on a forum for footy fans (we're not the sharpest tools in the box)? How many season ticket holders at football clubs have even heard of him? Most haven't a scooby who Romney is.

Not many, I wanted to know how many, that was the point.

What does my education have to do with anything?

Lots of threads on NSC are O/T, its a wonderfully diverse and tolerant football board.

Oh, and I think Ron Paul just won the nomination :D
