[Albion] Romas in ground atmosphere

Did we do a lot of damage on Thursday then ? Genuinely didn’t see any from Tuesday morning through to Friday morning - either inside or outside the ground or anywhere else in the city, nor see or hear of any locals attacked. Pop back on here next Friday and tell us how you were treated in Brighton and at the Amex. I doubt Roma will feel the need to issue you all with specific warnings about the likelihood of violence or robbery, and making your own way to the stadium (if your reputation allows this to happen) will be perfectly safe - you won’t be told to avoid certain areas and won’t need police protection:shrug:

The few examples of twattish behaviour on the part of a tiny minority of our lot has (as usual) been rightly called out on here, as it usually is at the time it happens.
We weren't talking about a single team/individual case: portlock generalised: "We’re British, not hot headed Latinos that stab" (and then went on criticising racism, after making a bold racist statement, that's pathetic).
So if we're talking about Brighton, no you guys are cool.
It's just that after decades of your fellow citizens (other teams' supporters) being violent in Rome, local idiots react as the idiots they are.
I'm here to just bring portlock down to earth, so he/she realises there's the other side's reality, which is not well represented in English media. For all the broken fingernails a poor Brit came back home with, I've seen tens and tens of big headlines, but for all the destroyed shops, disorder, and violent behaviour I've WITNESSED every f***ing time an English team plays in Rome, I've never read or heard anything from English media. OF COURSE portlock thinks Brits are "not hot headed". In his mind, the Heysel tragedy probably never happened, and "Hooligan" is a thing of the past now that the UK THINKS it solved the problem internally, but doesn't care about abroad.

You’re funny. Finish the bottle, it’s Friday after all. But maybe stay off the net and stop digging Rodders
All your answers are empty, like this one, there's nothing in them, no concrete counter-argument. And you put on "ignore" people, when you don't even have any EMPTINESS to claim.

Oh ok let me get this straight: if "BRIAN FANTANA" hasn't seen something, then it didn't happen.
Have you seen what happened Heysel Stadium disaster?

I love all these replies either deny or undermine British violence and neo-nazism, which is well known across the world, so much so that even Americans, when they have to refer to such scum, they use THE word that points to England: HOOLIGANS.

But sure, you've never seen those things you've listed, because you're standing right there, it's behind you mate!

That’s absolutely not what I said at all, but you’re seemingly incapable of having a nuanced conversation.

I said what you’d described didn’t tally with my own experience, not a broad brush statement that it didn’t happen. I was more challenging your assertion that we were totally blind to things because our media didn’t report it - I was saying that with my own eyes visiting grounds all over the country, I’d not seen anything like you’d described.

Yeah, but what is the relevance of your "own experience"? I bet there are thousands of topics where your own experience doesn't tally with what other people describe.
"Oh you've been raped on the Tube? I've never seen someone being raped on the tube, I've never seen someone being aggressed on the tube, I've never seen someone being disturbed on the tube, I've always had a great time on the tube, reading books, the Tube is great". What kind of answer is that?

Got any pics of the damage, destroyed shops etc from this week as it happens ‘every f***ing time’ ?

You want to be really careful here mate. There’s a good chance someone will make your cappuccino with soy milk and if you go into the wrong night club you might get cuddled by a Muscle Mary

I've been allowing your posts to be viewed, until now at least, because despite your rather angry and confrontational tone, we try to be even-handed. On most communities, you would already have been banned based on your opening contributions. You might want to consider your approach if you wish to remain here for much longer.

In between your vitriol, there is merit to some of your points, less so on others. But I'm not having what seems to be your general tone of "British fans have misbehaved before, therefore it's kinda ok that Brighton fans were beaten up and stabbed this week".

That should never happen to anyone anywhere, and there is no justification at all. What happened was horrible and, it's only luck that we aren't talking about fatalities, because when you attack someone, particularly with knives, you don't know what the outcome will be, even if your intent is merely "to hurt them a bit". There are numerous tragic tales of someone taking a fall in this kind of incident, smashing their head and sadly dying.

So you’re telling me that my own experience of things doesn’t have any weight all, yet if we go and talk to your neighbour then they will tell us everything that has happened before, and that personal experience will be absolutely representative of the whole picture?

Right. Makes total sense.

I already specified many times you guys are cool and pay for the price on behalf of other English supporters (am not justifying it).
Also, a broken shop's window doesn't make headlines in Rome either. Neither do people enjoying their time at a "bar", being harassed by a drunk Brit.
But you can look up on the internet about bigger cases, if you speak Italian (because as we've established, british press is not very good at covering the news when it's your fellow citizens who aggress others abroad).

Seems to have gone into 2 topics. For what it’s worth atmosphere was great. I personally didn’t find it intimidating, and had a good laugh at the man going crazy with his 20 year old son because he seemed offended by us singing the great escape.
Not a massive fan of the name chanting after the goal but pre match song sung in unison flags flying was quite a sight.

As for the other topic. @Coozi I’d be amazed if anyone thought English fans are angels. You’re also jumping quite a way into history though with some of the examples. No matter who travels away you’re bound to have some drunken idiots even now but this isn’t the UK in the 80s. I can’t of course comment for other clubs who have in recent times travelled to Rome. I know I’d be disappointed if Brighton fans were involved in trashing the city. You sort of said yourself people justify things based on past club visits and not judged us on who we are. In regards to the BBC on this one does seem 2 innocent people were jumped upon and attacked and that was reported. They were just as scathing though for example of English fans at the euro finals at Wembley v Italy for example and how football hooligans had let the country down.

The only other football violence reported that I’ve seen (SM, not ‘press’) from this week also involved Italian fans.

"It's kinda ok that Brighton fans were beaten up and stabbed this week"??
Could you please quote any of my posts where I've hinted at anything close to this concept?

I actually said the exact opposite, you just need to read a couple of posts like the ones below, where I explicitly specified that whoever attacks or stabs is not justified (and called whoever does "idiot").

My only point is to respond to a racist post (which you overlooked maybe), where a guy says "We're Brits, we're not like Latinos" (let's ignore the term, it's better). Is this guy from the National Front? "We're Brits": PFFFHH!
My point is that putting yourselves on a pedestal doesn't sound honest, when you consider that, abroad, English supporters are just as obnoxious, if not more, as any other football fan base of most European countries with an important Ultras tradition, and when you consider that when someone thinks about football violence, they think about hooliganism, and that's for a reason. That's my whole point. Be honest, and try to go past the BBC biased and filtered reporting which represents a one-sided reality. And don't criticise racism with racist claims.
Also, with all the stabbing going on in England, let's attribute football violence to that as well. I don't exclude it was a supporter that stabbed the Brighton fan, but generalising without knowing, again, doesn't seem fair.

Otherwise, kudos to you for being so open and letting me answer. I'm sorry if anyone got hurt. I myself or my friends have had bad experiences in England (Manchester, Liverpool, London three times), but I didn't make the news in the UK (nor in Italy), so I guess it doesn't count for portlock or brianfontana.

I'm not the one making racist generalisations, and then backing them up with ANECDOTAL counter-evidence. You guys are.

So yes, it does make perfect sense, Brian.

At the end of my tether
I must make plain that I was not there , confined to home these days. I have seen a vlog from an Italian showing his experiences. Man, that was mental !
I once went to Wembley for England v Scotland and I thought that was the ultimate in crowd atmosphere, but there was no comparison with the noise, flares and smoke bombs in Rome. Frankly I would not want that at our football - too intense for this old codger.

With the Italians it always comes back to Heysel...
Oh right, just because 39 people died there due to English hooliganism... like, "get over"... right?
Also, Heysel was just peak English football violence, and so that alone should debunk portlock's Briths supremacy claims. But English people (or "Brits") are really really in no f***ing position IN GENERAL to school anyone on football sobriety. So it just sounds ridiculous to read euphemisms like "English are no angels, but...". Just criticise and accuse individuals for their own actions, rather than backing up a racist idiotic comment.

Please don’t lump me in with any posts that contain accusations of making racist comments, because I had absolutely no part in that. In fact, I’d ask you to edit that post immediately because that is something I’m not standing for at all and won’t hesitate to take further.

I also didn’t say that there haven’t been any issues for Italian fans in England. I just said in my own experience, I’d not seen similar things to what I’ve seen in Italy - that’s it.
