I’d have Roy Orbison, Scott Walker and Sinatra in the top 10, I am a massive fan of Dylan and Neil Young but neither have great voices so that list can f*** off for me

Nobody, Dylan aside delivers lyrics better than Sinatra imo

Thanks Swanny. I have kept the ones I like (or have liked in days gone bye). There were some duplicates in the list, and spelling errors. I suspect the list was assembled by an old journo in his 70s and his middle daughter, with a bit of help from her sulky teenage son. .

Oh, go on then. Top five you say? I'll be scrupulously fair and not just list the ones I have been listening to just in the last five years....I'll respect my yoof tastes a bit...

Peter Hammill (Vandergraff Generator)
Donald Fagan (Steely Dan)
Brian Wilson (Beach Boys)
Joe Casey (Protomartyr)
Tobi O'Kandi (O Children)

Sorry, no, though. Five? Can't do it.

Dusty Springfield
Jim Morrison (The Doors)
Roger Chapman (Family)
Peter Gabriel (Genesis)
Julie London
Kennedy Ashlyn (the artist known as SRSQ)
Lester Bullock (the artist known as Dillinger)
Steffen Keth (De/Vision)

I have to stop now or I will be here till I have 100. And then I still won't stop :lolol:
Oh Roger Chapman is SUCH a good one - Burlesque is an utter classic

First page I opened had Bob Dylan, I kind of assumed it was a Viz page at that point.

I'd expect Steve Marriot to be near the top of the Honky list.

Had a chance to read the list on the train last night.
Wish I hadn’t.
Such poor poor potted history research from the combined journalists on so many counts, and some embarrassing placings too.

Isn’t “best” so subjective as to be pointless? I mean most people won’t have even heard of my favourite singers, because they are less well known/not in a fashionable musical style which would be popular with RS readers. Or NSC ones for that matter.

What they mean is “most popular singers of all time, from a variety of genres, which have musical credibility in the eyes of our brand”.

There's singers on the list that I don't like but can appreciate their talent (Adele) but the omission of Steve Winwood renders the whole list as bollocks.

Put on headphones and treat yourself:

Like honey in your ears.

Quoting my own post, but I just wanted to add praise for Lou Rawls who sings the backing on this and a lot of Sam's records. Until buying the classic double album compilation 'Sam Cooke - The Man and His Music' in the mid eighties, I only knew Lou from his Barry White type Philly soul recordings in the seventies. I wasn't into that stuff at the time and had dismissed him a bit. Listening to this again reminded me that I've never reallly gone back and listened again to his stuff. I 'll have to rectify that. What a voice.
