AFC Wimbledon beat our Island side 3-0 on Saturday.

Date: 20 July 2009

By ERIC CLAGUE

A SLICK and highly efficient performance from Blue Square Conference new boys AFC Wimbledon helped the Londoners complete a 3-0 victory over the Island side at Ramsey FC's triangular invitational tournament on Saturday.

Following a couple of disappointing results at the Island Games in Aland, the Manx side were looking to bounce back prior to their next NLS Cup contest in September.

After having to withstand early pressure Kevin Manning's side created an excellent opportunity, but St George's striker Calum Morrissey's header shaved the crossbar.

The Manx were then indebted to keeper Mark Blair as the visitors continued to up the pace.

Blair produced excellent handling as he denied efforts from Elliot Godfrey, Steven Gregory and Chris Hussey, all players to watch out for next season.

Stand-in skipper Nick Hurt produced another highly competent display in defence, but there was little he could do as Lewis Taylor converted a well-worked move on 29 minutes to give Wimbledon the lead.

The southerners didn't let up after the break and soon added to their advantage.

There may have been something slightly fortunate about Godfrey's second, as he beat Blair from close range, but the third, from the impressive Danny Kedwell, was a sweetly struck effort from the edge of the box.

As the half developed the Manx side never gave up with Morrissey and sub Ant Moore both having strikes on goal that only just missed the target.

Grant Dawson replaced Blair and proved equally adept in goal, but Kedwell really should have netted his second but somehow sent an easy header wide of an upright.

Isle of Man Mark Blair (Grant Dawson), Julian Ringham (Gary Williams), Nick Hurt, Adam Cregeen, Daniel Lace, Kevin Megson (Ant Moore), Jack McVey, Frank Jones, Steve Riding, Stephen Glover (Aaron Hawley), Calum Morrissey (Josh Kelly).

AFC Wimbledon James Pullen, Luke Gerrard, Chris Hussey, Stuart Gregory, Paul Lorraine, Brett Johnson, Ricky Willard, Lewis Taylor, Danny Kedwell, Calvin Bossman, Elliot Godfrey.

Subs used Jack Turner, Marcus Gayle, Russell Harmsworth.
Referee Mark Thomas
Attendance 279

* In the tournament's two other games, hosts Ramsey lost 8-1 to Wimbledon, before narrowly going down 4-3 to Manning's national side in the afternoon's last game.

I remain traumatised by the last visit. I believe the next step of my therapy should be to watch an emphatic victory.

-Almost like watching 4-0 defeats at Brentford in successive defeats - not quite recovered from that one either.

Perhpas these are just excuses I make to back up my arguments for needing to be there!

Well look at that - there could be quite a few.

Yeah, I might pop down actually, will be good to see the new boys in action...

i may "try" and get there because I don't work a normal 9-5 job and can't say when I will leave. But luckily for me I have managed to get it sorted and there will be 3 (if not 4) of us attending the mighty Kingsmeadow. :yahoo:
