Left us yesterday, aged 90, having been lucky enough to have met her once, I have to say one of the most genuine political figures I've ever encountered.

R.I.P. Shirley. Respected by the Right, much loved by Labour and the Liberals. Honest, brave, strong, a brilliant speaker and a formidable opponent. She makes my Top Ten of UK politicians.

I had the good fortune to meet her twice, during one of which she was in professional mode. As others have said, she was deeply impressive - regardless of one's politics, it was inspiring to see someone fight her case with such passion, intellect, integrity, and compassion. One of the very few politicians I have met about whom I could use such positive words. RIP.

Boy could the Labour Party do with her kind now.
RIP .

At the risk of upsetting the apple cart and hijacking the thread, there is a current MP of a Brighton constituency, who l think would make an excellent Labour leader. He/she currently represents a different party though.
