RIP Lt Uhura, sad that on a day of huge advancement for women, we lose someone who was ground breaking in a different way in her time.

I second that RIP. She was the best reason to watch the old StarTrek . I just remember the legs .
Actually as a series it had some serious story lines and good acting..

I feel guilty about remembering the legs. But we’ll aware of the NASA work and so on afterwards.

It was always rumoured that the original Star Trek was recommended viewing for Philosophy students at Oxford because of the ethical issues it sometimes raised.

They showed that kiss on the BBC this morning. Very awkward seeing as it looked like she was being forced. The presenter made an embarrassed comment about him being keener and they moved on.

If I recall correctly the story line was that Kirk & Uhura had been possessed by aliens or something. Might explain it. Or it could also be that she wasn't into it.

The storyline had to be that they were forced into it by aliens, to get around the fact it was a mixed race kiss. Racial problems were still very much at the fore when Startrek went out.
