Yes it is. It's a very affectionate and accurate reflection of the Home Guard, and perhaps wartime Britain generally, as has been observed on this thread and confirmed by many people over the years. But what made it work so well was the characters, which blended so beautifully, and were universal. We all recognise a Captain Mainwaring when we see one, or a Sergeant Wilson, or a Fraser, a Walker, a Mr Hodges ... and a Private Pike. Really elegant comedy writing and some great performances all round.The show is timeless imo

Arnold Ridley (Private Godfrey) was exactly the same, and helped with details for the scripts.Fond memories of watching the show on TV with my grandad, a WW1 veteran also a Home Guard member in WWII . He assured me that the show reflected how it was in the real "Dads Army"
