Some of the bands were pretty good - Sleater-Kinney, Jack Off Jill to name two...it'll never go down as the greatest movement in history, but there was some good songs in the middle of the crap.

A friend of a friend was in Huggy Bear.

A few of us went to see them live. They were 'our' Riot Grrrrl (no i in Grrrl, pedant alert) band, being based in Brighton.

Unfortunately they were shit.

Yes Sleater Kinney were good. L7 were apalling but often got their fannies out in the name of feminism. Watch out for flyimg jamrags though. Any genre that gave us Courteny Love should be wiped from the annals of time.

I agree about Courtney Love, but i think she's distanced herself from the movement as she thought the music was crap, among other reasons. An annoying bint though.

Do music fanzines still exist? Couldn't go to watch certain bands at that time without everyone trying to sell you a fanzine.

I saw Huggy Bear, Blood Sausage, Mambo Taxis, and the Voodoo Queens. Loved them all, especially photocopied rants inserted inside the sleeves of 7" singles. Never got to see SK. Most of the music doesn't stand the test of time that well, but it was all about attitude and energy. Is it inappropriate of me to say I found girls wearing hairclips very acceptable? Would be interested in buying a book about the scene - I'm sure a lot of it went over my head...

I listened to a CD by Brassy the other day which was a 90s band. Not strictly Riot Girl but I enjoyed it.

Riot Grrrl and the fanzines was the first thing that got me into good music. Still love lots of the bands:Huggy Bear, Team Dresch, Bikini KIll, Bratmobile, Slant 6, Skinned Teen. Brighton used to have a few good zines...rigsby, tadpole, zonked.
