Rio:
1 missed drugs test

That's not a football reason.
Spoilt child antics

That's not football reason

Bad for dressing room[/quote[

How so? Rio is reported to be one of locker room leaders, is a former captain, an is reported to be one of the more well liked players.

Always injured

Except for those 30 games (out of 50) he played in, including 3 in 8 days in november, december, april. Those 30 appearances more than doubling the number kelly made.

Youth player forced his way into Liverpool team

Forced his way in? 12 appearances this year out of 51 competitive games

Will Kelly get on with John Terry?

I don't know. I guess it depends on if Terry has been accused of racially abusing his brother or sleeping with his girlfriend.

Does RF have a chip on his shoulder?

Now that some reserve kid for a team that finished 8th in the premier league has been added to the list of people who have been selected ahead of him "for footballing reasons" he may have (with good cause), i.e. a chip that wouldn't be there if he had been selected. A list topped with the guy he believes racially abused his brother, btw.

Has JT been found guilty of breaking the law?

What does that have to do with the supposed footballing reasons that led to Rio not being selected? Why strip the captaincy of him if he's not been found guilty of breaking any laws yet?

Football is a TEAM game, this is a good footballing reasons, as we need a united team.[/QUOTE]

But do they really think he isn't good enough, or do they think "rio and terry can't be in the same side, so we'll pick the guy accused of racism, rather than the alleged victim's brother". Granted, if he felt that strongly about it, he should have said something at the time rather than waiting, but the excuse that Rio was left out of the team for 'footballing reasons' is being exposed with every new call up.

Ferdinand's manager, and a fair few former-England players, have all said he can't manage the Euro games as they come in quick succession.

I rather think that he knows this but rather than admit his time is WAY over, would rather make the world think it's because a. Terry hates him, b. Roy hates him, c. he's due some 'respect' (whatever the f*ck that means), d. (the latest one) because he's black.

I am becoming irrationally angry with the arrogance and posturing and ego-mania of Ferdinand and his ilk; thank GOD he and Richards are so far up their own backsides that they make themselves unpickable.

Whatever else is going on with this story, I have formed one opinion about it all. Jamie Moralee is a complete toad. I used to like watching him banging in the goals at Priestfield, but now it seems he is just another agent trying to crawl his way up the backside of (presumably) his richest and highest profile client.

Ferdinand and Moralee have both behaved with zero dignity. It's Hodgson's decision - as a certain Gus Poyet says, management is all about making decisions and then accepting the consequences.

Maybe Roy has decided that we haven't got much of a chance, so rather than take an injury-prone 33-year-old who probably won't be in his thinking for the World Cup in Brazil, why not give a chance to a promising younger player?

Liverpool-watchers that I know rate Kelly very highly. He also gives England an option at right back in case Johnson falters - a specialist rather than the lumbering Phil Jones, who has played the position for Manchester United, but only tended to look good there because visiting teams at Old Trafford cower in their own halves and give the home side the freedom of the flanks - not something that France, Sweden or Ukraine will do.

I couldn't give a crap if Rio's supporting the team or not. He's shown his true colours and I hope he never gets the chance to play for England again.

The other thing is, that could this "footballing reasons" line be related to the JT racism debate? Surely having both of them in the team could affect the 'football' being played. I can imaging them squaring up to each other as Schweinsteiger waltzes past them both and pops the ball in the net...

His manager is notorious for not wanting his players playing for their country, it is a nuisance to him, that tires out his players. This same manager who says rio can't handle the number of games played him three times in 8 days in november, december, and as recently as April. His words don't exactly match up with his own team selection.

Today it comes out that Rio could still be considered for the world cup Rio Ferdinand has England future after axe Roy Hodgson | The Sun |Sport|Football|Euro 2012.

I don't believe Rio has shown any arrogance over his place in the england team, but over the way he has been lied to - if Roy had said he couldn't have Terry and Rio in the same squad and had made his choice on Terry, then seeing kelly called up would fit. He has been told he is not being picked for 'footballing reasons'. This is clearly nonsense.

without question "footballing reasons" includes the effect on team morale and the ability of the management and coaching staff to do their job without interference that selecting Ferdinand would involve.

Correct me if I'm wrong, but I think he scored ONE goal there for us in an entire season. So I'm not sure what you were watching.

He did indeed score 1 league goal at home that season, 2 away from home and one in whatever the Johnsons Paint Trophy was called back then. He also scored a few with Daniella Westbrook at some point that season, maybe that is what Ninja Elephant is referring to and he spent many a night watching their bedroom antics with a pair of high powered binoculars.

If the hearsay and speculation in that article is even remotely close to having truth tickle its edges, what did we honestly expect Roy Hodgson to respond with? A coded "Stop whining and bleating as I have more important things to deal with at the moment" is what The Sun could be trying to report.

Who are we, indeed, who is Ferdinand, to question "footballing reasons"? It could be any number of things, from not having played too many recent internationals, from having a back problem history, from not being able to play an intensive series of games any more (I choose to believe Ferguson just this once on this!!), or Hodgson wanting to slowly bring in potential World Cup starters.

Red Nose wouldn't want his " big names " missing the pre/mid season shirt sales tour to the far east now, would he ?

It's a shame Hodgson does not have the sense, or guts, to explain the reasons to Rio.

He's the manager. He has already cited 'footballing reasons' - that's enough. He doesn't have to persuade Rio that he has made the correct decision.

(To the footballing reasons we can now add 'attitude problems - unable to accept authority of the manager').

Even before RH was given the job, let alone announced the team, few people seemed to give England much of a realistic chance beyond quarter finals at best. We don't know what team HR *might* have picked *if* he had become England manager but he surely would not be getting the same critism if he had made exactly the same choices as RH. Some of his choices were always going to be hard but he has made them and I wish him and the team the very best. It's great to see some opportunity given to new talent and I support the team selection overall. It says alot about England's form over the past few years that the stand out player IMHO has been Ashley Cole - a guy who I have no time for as far as his life outsode of football goes - but has been England's best player for a long time now. RF is a sulking donkey and his inclusion or exclusion will make little difference to England's overall performance. I wish we had an alternative to Terry right now but hopefully this will be his last tournament.

Wether or not RH is capable of picking an England team that can improve over the next couple of years remains to be seen but I really hope than the ivory tower negativity of some of the old school is wiped away as younger players are brought in.
