Not everybodys cup of tea , but hey some bargains to be had!

Leading pub chain JD Wetherspoon is to slash prices on some drinks and food, offering a pint of beer for less than £1, down to 1989 prices, the company revealed.
The company, which operates 713 pubs across the UK, said the price reductions on some beer, bottled lager, wine and spirits will run "indefinitely".
A number of meals will also be offered at £2.99, said the firm, which opened 20 new pubs in the last few months of 2008, creating hundreds of new jobs, despite the economic downturn.
Wetherspoon's chief executive John Hutson said: "People enjoy going to the pub. However, we appreciate that the economic downturn means that they now have to be more careful with their money.
"We believe that our new food and drink prices will allow people to enjoy a visit to a Wetherspoon pub without it costing them too much.
"Unlike most sales that start in January, our offers will not be ending within days, but will run indefinitely."
Greene King IPA will be cut to 99p a pint, as will a bottle of San Miguel, the company announced.

ps a downloadable book of Burger King deals is imminent (will post when link is active :))

f***ing hell, can't believe I missed that. Great spot. Lidl rocks my world.

I have only just started venturing in, not for any financial reason but I thought I'd check out what all the fuss was about.

I found some very good quality minced bef (really - not "cheap" stuff), but not any cheaper than you can get elsewhere since everyone seems to have offers on. What I'd really like is a convenient local butcher, but they've all shut down.

This has happened over the last couple of days and was so intrigued yesterday, I popped in again today.

A few other observations...

- Perfectably nice Pinot Grigio and a Chardonnay for about £3 a bottle. This was my biggest surprise along with the lovely Organic mature chedder.

- Lurpack butter much cheaper than elsewhere

- Bit of a wierd one, a not very mature slice of Parmesan. Very cheap, but not knock your block off tasty. Fine for cooking with though.

- Some very very cheap Serrano ham that I will brave on a homemade pizza, but the Salami looked a bit scary so I avoided that. Bit more difficult to add something nasty to Serrano I reckon, could of course be Serrano donkey.

- Cheap but so so tinned tomatoes, better quality ones avaliable elsewhere for the same price (on offer)

- Little packets of Passata (sieved tomatoes), bought for the usefullness of their size more than anything else.

- Thai Jasmine Rice, cheaper than at other supermarkets, but I can pick it up cheaper in china town.

- Shower gel at 12p a go. I suspect it's some random chemical that next week will end up as toilet cleaner, but if you don't try these things you will never know.

That's all very well, but bet you couldn't find any Organic Lager ? :p

Mind you, they do a lovely line in open toed sandals that I'm sure will look lovely with your copy of The Guardian rolled up and tucked under your arm ;)

Freecycle.

I once joined my local Freecycle.

Great idea, but every single 'ad' went straight to my email inbox and so if I didn't check my email for a week or so ( quite common for me ) I'd come back to find it cluttered with literally hundreds of freecycle 'ads'.

I ditched that email account and never been near freecycle since.

I do like the idea & ethics behind it though, and if I could access it a different way I'd join it again.

Fair comment, I guess it depends on where you live, whether it is a large town or city and how many people use it. I was shown it yesterday by a friend who has used it to dispose of items no longer needed and to pick up things to furnish her home.
