The Veltman/Milner debate is the kind of topic I’d hope a journalist queries RDZ on just so we can get an idea of his thinking.
And you’re not going to get that from Naylor unfortunately. He’s just released another pathetic puff piece in the Athletic today telling us that Milner has lots of experience. Incredible insightful journalism.

OT but I really wish we had an Athletic reporter who was on the ball when we want to find things out like Enciso’s injury or why Milner is playing RB instead of Veltman and could actually contribute an article of interest to that site for a change.

I think it's less about the particular players and more about how he wants them to play.
You can play Veltman, but it won't help the situation if he's stood 60m up the field when the opposition get possession and counter.
If you want your RB to be that far forward then playing Milner makes complete sense.

I suspect the thinking is along those lines too, but I’d still love to hear RDZ’s explanation 🙂

Agreed, as long as the defensive system as a whole is sound.

From memory when countered down our right last season, other than the odd calamity eg Everton, if the RB was caught upfield, opponents still had to beat Colwill, Dunk and Caicedo. Then Estupinan would appear out of nowhere with an astonishing tackle on our right. He did this once on Saturday in the first half.

I too am completely baffled by veltman being left out.

A player who has either been good, very good, or terrific in near enough every game he's played for us.

Lamptey can then get the chance to prove his fitness and ability when cup games start coming round.

Whatever, let's not play full backs who are very slow or are actually center mids
I might be baffled if he was left out, but he's played in all three PL games this season. Milner did well enough in the first two PL games for him to start the third. If I was manager, I'd probably start Veltman, but I'm not and I recognise that RDZ knows what he's up to, so I'll just accept that there's something that I'm unaware of or am not seeing.

Have a look at Pervis for their second and third goals. Yet nowhere on NSC is this being talked about.

It's more than a little odd there have been so few rumours about signing a new right full-back as it's obviously an area we need to strengthen. At the moment we don't have a first choice there but rather 3 back-ups. I don't get it.

Velts is not a backup

I think the thing is that the usual posters get bored and irritated when anyone bangs on about something (e.g., see @b.w.2. ), i.e., repeatedly posts the same thing, again and again, repeatedy. Saying the same thing in different posts. Keeps on saying the same thing.

I wasn't aware that you're one of them

However, Webster was too slow and of bad judgement yesterday. He faffed for one goal when row Z was the right choice, and he stood off for another when he should have intercepted the cross.

MOTD highlighted Wham deliberately exploiting the space Webster was meant to patrol.

That said, creating that space is a consequence of the way we play. It is part of our high risk strategy. Must do better. Not sure how without disrupting our flow. A Webster upgrade (someone faster) may be something. Otherwise it will be possible for a team to get 20% possession and beat us on the break.
I agree with you but... I don't think row Z is ever the right choice for RDZ, as he wants possession. So, Webbie tries to keep possession by flicking it back to the keeper - poor flick= goal.
I think that was a consequence of how the players are coached to play, so I don't blame Webbie only. But, yes, row Z every time in that situation please.

I get what you're saying...kind of.
I'm getting on a bit, and try to keep up with all this formation malarkey stuff, so...if we're gonna play with our RB 60 yards up the pitch, and our LB anywhere between 0 and 100 yards up the pitch (at least he's blinking rapid!), and this means we're open at the back with 2 slow-to-turn CBs and currently no fast/destructive DM to protect them... could we be better off playing a 352 with wing backs (given current personnel available)?? can someone enlighten me please! Cheers 👍

Opinions. I recall @hans kraay fan club (I think it was him) deeming Milner’s performance against Luton very poor. I thought he was very exposed as an isolated RB, then in the final hour he was great as a bits and pieces midfielder.

Probably, but you'd still take a player away from somewhere else.
There's a gap in the squad in the defensive midfielder position. Maybe a general excessively cavalier attitude that will inevitably be exposed occasionally. You can't simultaneously think it's great that we get so many players forward when we attack and think it's unacceptable to be caught out on the counter sometimes.

Agree. Ultimately it comes down to individual decision making. Yes, RDZ wants possession and players to be brave, but Webster just made a really poor decision there

True...I hope they're spending as much time training for defending the counter attack as they clearly spend training for attacking moves 😉

Pervis is probably my favourite player but I have to agree with this.
Very true. Whilst Webster fails again by not making any attampt to get tight and stop the cross coming in, Pervis has switched off and loses track of Bowen. I'm in the WSU on the half way line so have a great view and as it unfolded I was shouting that Bowen was free.

I love Pervis but it was also never going to be given a penalty when he went down in their box as his fall was way too theatrical. I'm not sure the defender made much attempt to get the ball but ironically it reminded me of a similar shoulder charge that Pervis got away with last season at home to Bournemouth.

Millie was good against Luton and Wolves. He should not be RB against a better team like West Ham. Same for Pascal
RDZ wants ball players and both PG & JM are being selected ahead of JV because of their ability on the ball. The West Ham tactic wasn't new, Everton did it, Forest did it. The response is to resist over committing against the low block and JV is the obvious player to allow a flexible 4/3 at the back, tucking in as a third centre back to stop Dunk & Webster being over exposed. He's the cleverest defender in the squad.
