Just what is it about the Argus's distorted interpretation of the club's updated stadium plans?

Their sensationalist reporting of Albion's 'house-keeping' planning application (sweeping up necessary changes forced by legislation) looks like a blatant attempt at shock story circulation-building.

The fact that such misleading tactics give unwarranted succour to the stadium opponents, while simultaneously giving Albion's long-suffering fans another scaremongering kick in the guts, adds up to irresponsibility on the part of the local newspaper.

The long-overdue community stadium will be a magnificent asset to Brighton and Hove and the rest of Sussex. So why is the stadium being controversially presented as '50 per cent bigger', when its visual impact is almost identical to the original design? In reality, the floor and concourse area internally has increased by just over 50% due to the redesign forced by legislation - but the overall footprint has marginally increased by under 7 per cent.

In addition, the spaces originally featuring the grass-topped chalk bunds has had to be hollowed out to create usable space - due to the legislation - avoiding the need to significantly increase the overall footprint of the stadium. Chalk facings and grass roofs are totally inappropriate in this context.

And why is an environmental impact saving of over one thousand tons of carbon emissions - eliminating 22,000 lorry trips of chalk removal, reducing the volume of chalk and enhancing the agricultural grading of the adjacent new spread area - being ignored in favour of another environmentalist diatribe?

For the record and for the avoidance of doubt, let me summarise the facts of our stadium 'house-keeping' planning application:

- Siting, location and orientation - No change
- Footprint area - Marginal increase (+ 6.7 per cent)
- Capacity 22,500 - No change
- Roof Height at apex and arch - No change
- Environmental impact - Improved

We expect the new application to be heard by the council in December or January and are confident it will be approved. We believe that councillors fully recognise the importance of the stadium to this city, because it would be totally perverse if the hopes and expectations of many thousands in this community were to be put in jeopardy yet again.

Consider yourself TOLD, JEWNOSE Barrett!

And, while i'm here / awake - it's a bit rude for Knight to say that, considering the amount that the Argus actually do for the club, Knight is shooting himself in the foot methinks

Hasn't Dick Knight got more important things to worry about, like actually getting the thing built after 12 years?

So what, the Argus have been doing that for years, so has most other newspapers; anyone who has half a braincell can work out things for themselves, and those that can't, well, who cares frankly!

Rather hypocritical for Knight & Perry to accuse the Argus of bullshit.

I should hope not AA :D

The problem is, lost of folks seem to read a newspaper and automatically believe what they read. My father-in-law is one, he reads the daily mail, and every time I see him, he tells me the end of the world is nigh. He's a lovely bloke, but never questions what he reads.

The main thing that's pissed me off about this whole story business is that it's now a nailed-on certainty that half time on Saturday will be filled by a 15-minute DIATRIBE from Knight.

Oh goody...

Hang on - isn't work supposed to have started by then? How long will it take the councillors to approve the new plans (if they do decide to approve them)? Aaggh! More delays!

Apparently, the work planned for 'December' will go ahead, but if the council turn it down, the work will have to stop. This is according to Martin Perry. Whether or not you believe him is up to you.

I have to say I disagree with most of the posts on this thread. I am NOT a member of the board, or the Falmer for All Committee and I have never met Paul Samrah or Lord Bracknell (much to their relief I expect!). However on this occasion I am really pleased to see DK put the boot in on those knobs at the Arsegas - they deserve it for that sensational wank they printed yesterday.

I'm not always with our chairman when it comes to matters of spin, but I do think he has some grounds for complaint on this one.

The Argus have taken what is some very old news, together with some very easily guess-able news on the cost increase (we all guessed it on here months ago) and suddenly decided to go very big on it.

The one valid element to the 'story' is whether or not the public inquiries were in any way sold a pup and reached their conclusions based on false information in terms of the design and obtrusiveness or otherwise.

I think the club just has to deal with that point, and they can quite easily, since it is only the unforeseen extent of the delays that have meant the design no longer complied with subsequent regulation changes. Ie, it is the NIMBYs' own doing.
