Shame about Macmillan’s - I’m a big fan of their sharing steaks / roasts. They’ve always been very much ‘effortless hipster’ service vibes but no excuse for that.

I'm a bit out of my depth here and definately not even an amateur food critic but we went to Rathfinny vinyard between Alfriston and Seaford for our anniversary lunch. It was a truly delightful experience in every respect, high quality throughout.. Plus the vineyard itself really is quite spectaular. Bookings are 2/3 months ahead which I guess is a fair indication of what others think

I have been tempted a few times, but they don't make it easy to book and someone is going to have to drive from where we are, unless we throw in an overnight stay. Cheers for the recommendation.

Absolutely superb take on a restaurant that sells a steak for £1,450 each, and a kebab takeaway down the road.
If you are in the least bit pretentious about your food, look away now ...

https://www.theguardian.com/food/2021/oct/17/jay-rayner-restaurant-review-kebab-kid-london-take-away-as-a-cult-nusr-et-steakhouse

Here's the menu- https://qr.finedinemenu.com/london-nusr-et-steakhouse/menu/60d4deae4dfebe137a275c14

As Jay suggests, you have to admire his chutzpah in relieving idiots of money they clearly don't need.

You've got to love Jay for that. Great stuff. Although, having caught up with four pages of the thread this morning, much like HT, it's Grace Dent and the peanut sauce that's going to be occupying my brain for a while.

Really ?

Borderline culturally offensive sitting outside a Turkish man's restaurant eating a kebab in protest because you feel his place is too expensive. The only similarity with kebab kid and nusret is that they both sell meat, they are not even in close proximity to each other.

At the end of the day nusr is packed every day with Arabs and Russians so if they wanna waste their money that's their perogative. Why should they lower the price if they can sell it out every day?

On a side note, nusr et is superb value in turkey in both Istanbul and bodrum. You can get a burger for a tenner and if I remember right the tomahawk was about 35/40 quid. He doesn't rip his own people off !!!

First time back to LFM on Friday. Some big changes, not all of which I approve of, but I suspect are down to the pandemic and losing the old front of house.

Firstly it's been refurbed and is cleaner and modern looking but without the comfort of the cook books everywhere. Duncan told us it's exactly how he wanted it to look and out of four of us, all who had been before, two preferred it and two didn't.

The food was absolutely divine as ever. He really is the best chef in Brighton by a very long way. So flavourful and precise and well thought out. However, he's now serving as well as cooking so he can explain the food, despite having two waitresses there taking orders and serving drinks. It's also one big sitting. This means that the table getting the food last in rotation has it slightly lukewarm. Our cod dish was like that and I'm a man who likes my main dishes piping hot.

After a recent trip to LFM this post really rang true. The overall service suffers I felt with the new format.

Some technically excellent cooking as expected but we waited a long time for drinks initially, the main wasn't hot and perhaps too long between certain courses put the overall dining time at 3 hours for 6 courses.

He's a food critic making a point that a £5 to £10 kebab is better food than a £1450 gold wrapped steak. That's his job.

The only sort of person I could imagine getting offended by it is someone who's eaten there and doesn't like their ignorant hubris being ripped to shreds. I imagine they're the same type who would spunk stupid money on a Euro Final ticket and then spend the next few months waving it in people's faces.

I used to live near kebab kid and ate there all the time, it's great and iconic. No way in a million years is the food comparable... what absolute nonsense. A cheapy kebab is nothing like a prime piece of wagyu. It's just a sneery guardian writer trying to be clever. What next, stand outside a Rolex store selling Casio's because a Casio does exactly the same as a Rolex and tell the time?? Pathetic.

And no way in hell would he would have the balls to do the same if Ramsay or a Michelin star chef ran nusr.

I'm not offended ... I think nusr in London is overpriced. But the bottom line is he can get away with charging these prices so fair play to him for that.

The (very obvious) point is that the Kebab Shop owners take pride in their food and Salt Bae takes pride in Instagram and money.

Have you ever been?

The service at salt bae is excellent. When I went in turkey they couldn't do enough to help out. They take pride in where they source their meat and for me it's up there with a Peter luger or Keens (bear in mind I've eaten in these places as well). The wagyu is superb.

If by pretentious you mean discriminating then, like I, Jay Rayner is just that. The people frequenting that restaurant obviously understand diddly squat about food beyond the price of it.

If it's superb, why does he need to wrap it in ****ing gold?

Middle Eastern culture is obsessed with gold. Again that's their culture. Majority of people that eat at nusr aren't white English !!!

And the majority of the menu is gold free .....

As I seem to be the only person whos actually eaten at nusr on this thread I will repeat it's a great steak joint.... One of the better ones. In.london though I would probably rather eat at cut or Goodman though and save my money.

I'm going to the Ivy in Brighton for dinner in a couple of weeks - with the current Mrs FG and 2 other couples - I've never been before so I'm looking for any personal opinions/guidance/recommendations.

From the website the food seems reasonably priced and the wine less-so? Not that that's a big issue as its a celebratory evening.

A mate of mine has eaten at the Istanbul branch and was also of the opinion that it was excellent. It seems like Mr. Bae has deviated from that somewhat though with the London enterprise. 50 quid for a cappuccino wrapped in gold

One of the only things that doesn't seem to have been touched by King Midas is the £11-a-pop cans of Red Bull. I'm not sure what's worse, the price or the fact that anyone's drinking an energy drink with their steak.

Mrs DCH took me for breakfast at Perch in Lancing this morning. From the road it doesn't look much but a nice dining space inside with sea views - this morning there were plenty of kitesurfers to watch while we were waiting.

It seems to be very popular, they turned away loads of people who didn't have reservations.

Breakfast menu is fairly small but the portions are generous and the quality of the produce seemed very good.

Exactly.

The place is clearly full of people who a) think Red Bull tastes ok and b) will pay more than the cost of 2 badly poured pints of Harvey's at The Amex for it.

I'd trust their judgement on a good steak as much as I'd let Stevie Wonder drive me around a Formula One track in a Red Bull Racing car.
