What do you say Lokki ? Unless you have a physical impediment I can't see why we can't bring this on.

Barrel of Fun

Abort, retry, fail
Its probably what I need right now. I Just need to take Lokki on head to head.

Gavlar. I plan to train properly this year. If you fancy training together then I shall make myself available.

We can take it in turns to lead, but I would be happy to slip stream you all the way.

Any help would be needed but I need the bit between my teeth and that's why I am waiting for Lokki to accept my challenge.

Ok. I will set you challenge then. I will run the 2013 Brighton Marathon for the REMF and pay for my own space if you do. I am 49 a smoker, drink too much and not in a great physical shape but I will take it on if you do.

Your running of the marathon and maximising of charitable donations should not be dependent on whether or not I enter, it should be incentive enough on it's own. You pledged to do this in previous years to great self promotional fanfare on NSC and then failed to actually do anything when the time came.

As it happens I suffer from arthritis for which I take fairly strong drugs twice daily and have done so for over 20 years. I did train for and run a 10km charity race in 2003 for an arthritis charity. I trained for 6mths, raised over £2,000 and finished in 49 minutes which I was very proud of at the time. This is no longer physically possible for me unfortunately but I am happy to sponsor you for your run in 2013. £20 if you finish, £50 if you finish under 5 hours, £500 if you finish under 4 hours.

IF you enter, you should do so, firstly, because you want to run a marathon. The second and third reasons for entering are that you want to run a marathon.

It's very dangerous to enter just because you want to raise money for a cause. That way lies failure and the guilt that you'll feel for not completing the run. And - of ALL the people associated with REMF - you, Gareth, are the one that no-one wants to see have any sense of failure or guilt. You've driven REMF forward for over a decade and you should be celebrating every success that the charity has ever achieved.

Don't do it.

Ok fair play then but what about £ 200 of if I finish in under 4 and a half hours and that is my target and will be tough ?

And btw if you know hard it is why have a pop at Tim's efforts ?

Thanks for the kind words but this is for me and paid for by me, to see if I can do it.

Possibly but I am on for this. I need the challenge and am waiting for it.

If you want to do it, just do it and don't wait for other people to through down a gauntlet. One of the key reasons a number of people enjoy running is that you primarily challenge yourself, with times and distances, and look to improve these and better yourself. There is no need for other people, it's you against you. What Lokki does should have no bearing on anything.

Wise words mate. I am going to try and do this and maybe asking you for help along the way.

If you put the training in 4 hours will be realistically achievable. It will mean you start running very soon and eventually build up to a 4-5 day a week programme in the new year but if you put the miles in and pay attention to diet and do some race planning you will stand a very good chance of cracking it.

Wish me well. Everyone probably thinks this is a load of bollocks and I can't blame them for that but I will try and do this and ask for support over the next year.

Ok agreed. And best of luck.

It is precisely why I have had a pop at Tim. It is hard, and yet he put in no effort but milked the event for his own self promotional purposes. Had he not been shamed into action in the last few days he would actually have cost the REMF money. He may have suffered on the run, but only because he was too lazy to train, hardly a "Ruddy Hero".

£50 from me if you go sub 4.30.

I'd suggest you start going out run/walking ASAP, like in the next week or so, while the challenge & motivation is fresh. Enter a 10k or a half marathon for Autumn so that you have a timescale to get fit enough to run that distance, and then build to the Marathon from there.
