Italy (Reuters) - A substantial amount of debris from the disabled US spy satellite 193 has landed on a farmhouse in Southern Italy. The bus-sized satellite was shot down by an SM-3 missile fired from an American warship in the early hours of Thursday morning. Whilst most of the fragments disintegrated on re-entry into the Earths atmosphere, it has emerged that a large section of the stricken satellite remained intact and crashed on the outskirts of Avellino, around 50 miles east of Naples, destroying a farmhouse and scattering further debris around a half-mile area.
At a briefing today, Pentagon spokesman Gen Cartwright confirmed the incident, but was keen to stress that no casualties had been reported. "We have been aware of several items of debris around the size of footballs coming down over the Atlantic over the last few hours, so it's unfortunate that a larger section of Satellite 193 remained intact and hit land, but there are no reports of any casualties. The area has been sealed off, and we have dispatched an ops team to Avellino to analyse the section that fell to Earth, but we are confident there will be no lasting damage as a result of this".
The owner of the farm, 63 year-old Pierluigi Monterro, was interviewed on a local Italian television network a short time ago. Speaking through an interpreter, Mr Monterro said: "Mama Mia, eet fall outta da sky and smasha ma fackin' barn all up innit". Mr Monterro confirmed there were no casualties, although sixteen chickens are currently unaccounted for, and a cow is said to have been badly scorched by the resulting blast.
