I’ve been wondering if players have a relegation clause in their contracts meaning that their salaries are reduced by 70% or whatever is needed to align them to competitive Championship remunerations if they get relegated from the EPL.
It then struck me that players would need to get something in return for agreeing to this in their contracts; maybe they get a Championship buy-out clause perhaps?
Could it be that there are a number of recently relegated players ready to trigger this clause rather than take a massive pay-cut. The price for Matheus Pereira is rumoured to be just £15m, this for a player who scored double figures last season in a relegated side. Could he have one of these escape clauses?
