Sorry if fixtures, but did anyone else find this a little odd in The Argus yesterday?

Thoughts?

Meanwhile, Poyet has strenuously denied complaints by Steve Brinkhurst’s mother about the manner in which the first year professional was released.

Angela Brinkhurst claims her son only found out when a friend rang to tell him an announcement had been made on the club website.

Poyet said: “We told him in February but he didn’t want to accept it. We told him to leave to go and play football. He said no I am staying here.”

Poyet has apologised for not telling fourth choice keeper Josh Pelling in person that he was not being retained.

He said: “I am really sorry, that was my mistake. We were dealing with Michel (Kuipers). I wanted to talk to Josh but he was somewhere else when we tried to get him up to the office.

“A statement was ready to go out and it went out before we talked to him. I got Charlie (Oatway) to call him at the same time as it was going out.”

Doesn't sound like it was handled very well does it.

I always assumed there was a set day, known by the players that the released / retained names would be announced, with players who are out of contract in the summer trotting off in turn to the managers office to find out their fate.

Sure, some may have been given a "heads up" previously that they wouldn't get retained and that they should start looking around, but it should still be done in person on a set date.

Let's not blow it out of proportion though. In the great scheme of things it won't affect the Gus Bus. Players let go, just as with players not in the side, are always going to be far more likely to be grumbling about their treatment.

We move on .....

What about? Brinkhurst's mum? Brinkhurst being told in Feb and it not being leaked? Pelling not being told before the news came out?

Only the Pelling one was worthy of comment and it looks like it was a genuine mistake for which Poyet is sorry. I'll forgive him for that.

Should have been given a year in the development squad, I think it is criminal that we sign these players permenantly and then they dont really get a chance after that, these guys should have been getting blooded last season but since our joke of a manager would rather play virgo left wing than a youngster he never got the chance.

He got his MUM to ring the manager and comlpain

Oh my days

Let's not jump to conclusions here. We don't know that he actually asked his Mum to go crying to the media - I'm sure everyones mother has done something a bit embarrassing in their time. Considerin the sort of thing you get up to I wouldn't like to know an example of your mother embarrassing you Danny!

Either way, it looks like she probably should have kept her mouth shut. It muct be pretty difficult being released at this stage by the club you love but at the same time looks like his parents have to understand that this is professional football now!

Hey, that was really out of order.

I'm gonna get my mum to send you a PM.

Assuming Poyet is being directly quoted - him.

Though as Chappers says, because the story itself is a non-event, them as well.

interesting.

i wonder about these things, maybe Naylor had a tip-off from the disgruntled players who were released ... how else would he know about Pelling and Brinkhurst?

then he has the issue, is this private business within the club (i would think yes, definately), or should these misdemenours be questioned by The Argus and bring it into the fans domain?

and as a consequence, have the club made Gus give a public apology, which is how it reads to me.

it's the whole what is the fans business/what isn't thing.

Yes she is.

personally having heard first hand of Steve's treatment, I think it is a bit shabby, but as you say life goes on. I assume the Argus rang her to ask her of her opinion and she gave it...

Its very easy to make a f*** up and then apologise later. Doesn't really make the recipients feel any better, but somehow deflects the blame.

Perhaps as we get to be a better run professional outfit this sort of thing won't happen in the future
