..are you ever convinced by people who claim they have no regrets? Surely everyone has something they wish they might have done slightly different?

If you are a happy fatalist then you have to think that way really, everything little thing you ever did brought you to where you are today....

Surely even the happy fatalist must reflect on occasion?

Self-audit is a must for progression. How could anyone ever change by not being aware of what they've done wrong? Ok it's nice to remember in moments of pride that something decent was achieved, but to utter that one's never erred is a fool's convention. David Cameron, if not all politicians really, are now that.

This.

Speaking as a happy fatalist myself, the whole point is that had while i might have done some things differently on reflection, had I actually done so in reality, I may not be in exactly the situation I am now. Hence, no regrets.

Moi, je ne regrette rien...

True, but being aware of your past mistakes is not the same as regret. Self-audit is just a way of preventing those same mistakes occurring in the future. What's done is done and you can't change it*, whether you choose to wallow in regret or not.

*Edit: unless you have a De Lorean, of course.

But this idea presupposes that you cannot reach the same point via a different route.

Not saying you can't, but you can't be certain that you would have. There is simply no way of knowing. I certainly didn't travel down the perfect route to where i am, but I'm happy where I am, therefore i cannot regret the events that got me here.

when I was younger I never used to sleep around and certainly never on a first date as I wanted to come across as a nice guy etc.

Many years later I look back as all those girls that I am no longer in contact with and have probably forgotten me and think why didn't I just nail them all??????

Yes the fact that so far I don't have a child with my darling wife !! Long story, but it would tick the final box as far as I'm concerned and more importantly "another Junior Seagull" Please forgive me but I'm off to start lighting the candles for when she gets home...

Flatlets, I’ve had a few. I must have lived, all over Brighton
And Hove, I’ve lived there too. I shared a house in Wilbury Gardens

Queens Park, the Seven Dials. That tiny bedsit quite near the library
But hey for heaven sakes. I’ve not lived at Fiveways

What is Fiveways. What has it got?
A loads of houses. A row of shops

And best of all shining so bright. All eighteen sets of traffic lights
Just for a joke. Some council bloke

Said let’s call it FIVEWAYS

Better to regret something you have done, than something you haven't.

Yeah I can understand that. Respect a girl and she'll think you dull and she'll go shag some right bastards....then come back for a shoulder to cry on!
