Someone with a bit more understanding of how transfers work might be able to help me on this one...

Does the fact he will be injured for the summer mean he can't sign for another club as he cannot complete a medical?

Its up to the club if they want him to do a medical before he signs. Its not a mandatory rule that he does one, its just a precaution clubs usually exercise before they sign the player.

Also they could still check his fitness in other ways knowing about the injury.

I'm fairly sure he will stay anyway, even if he was fit.

Portsmouth will probably not bother with a medical and then offer him a £5 million per year, 6 year contract when everything is cleared up at their end and they start with a nice clean slate in the championship in August.
