Why do referees wear the same partial kit combo as the teams playing? Teams have to have a complete contrast, why not the ref, small point which wouldn't have helped yesterday mind.

I would imagine its because people are able to spot the difference between a guy wearing a bright orange shirt and a guy wearing some sort of dark blue thingie with stripes and an eye-poking logo belonging to a made up sponsor.

I thought that too. I know I'm old and decrepid, but there were times yesterday, when for a split second I wondered if a Palace player was the ref.

On Saturday Lewes played Chichester, who wore lurid yellow and black stripped shirts. I had to keep counting their players, as they were so noticable I genuinely wondered if they had 12 on the pitch!

Small differences and all that.

Must have been a real disappointment finding out that their winger wasn't a middle-aged white man carrying around a flag. It would have helped us.

In the Guardian it said that the first goal came from a corner - which only happened because the ref fouled Baleba. I missed the game - was that what happened?

I’m more concerned that his performance didn’t differentiate him from Palace than his kit

I was VERY disappointed that there was no ref thread this week. Standards are slipping.

Come on. Are you going to tell us who’s the officials and who’s the player in this photo, or keep us in suspense even longer?

Actually just been watching the game back and tbh, Oliver is standing still and Baleba runs into him. It’s also miles up the field and they have 2 corners in the time that happened and the goal. It’s a massive reach to be blaming that for anything.

Is the wrong answer , in a tight group of players such as a corner or free kick a ball played to feet based on team colours is impossible , simple option is for the officials to do their job properly and wear non conflicting colours .

Ref got in the way of Baleba getting to a Palace player with the ball

….should have blown up and given a drop ball
If the ref gets in the way of the ball, it's a drop ball. If he gets in the way of a player, it isn't. That's the rule at present, and I doubt it will change because they don't want to risk players running into the ref and taking a dive like they do with other players.

Fair enough…..pity common sense can’t be applied though

It would take 5, maybe 10 seconds for a colour blind person to chose the kits 2 teams, and the referees should wear for a match.

After the Premier League blatantly lied to me a couple of years ago about some 'software' they have to ensure kits are chosen so as not to disadvantage colour blind people I think there is little concern from the authorities as to how we fans see the game. The referees will always do what they like, the premier league is incapable of implementing a robust system for this. The clubs seem to not give a toss either, although I would say there have been fewer instances this season of kit clashes for the colour blind, but not no instances.

UEFA no better, for our first Europa League game, v Athens, I have it on good authority that a considerable amount of the time spent in the pre match briefing for officials, police, stewards etc was spent on the referees deciding what kit they should wear. Cue the game, and for the colour blind fans we saw 13 Athens outfield players. If you watch the replay of that game there is a moment when Mitoma goes to dart to his left, sees the referee and immediately turns the other way, perhaps Karou is one of our colourblind players  .

I thought the reason for teams wearing different colour shorts/socks was to assist officials with tight throw in/corner decisions, e.g in a melee of legs with the same colour socks could be difficult to identify which team touched the ball last.

Surely that's not an issue with the officials?

It won’t stop them getting in the way, like the one at the weekend. Not only in the way in midfield, he positioned himself poorly at a corner preventing a pass to the edge of the area.
