Can a ref be sent off
Correct to be charged with improper conduct.
However, the FA have to do something about the way players talk to referees, yes they can be s**t at times but everyone is human, everyone has a breaking point and some shorter than others and the constant shit players give referees can’t be easy, particularly in lower league games where it’s probably easier to get away with abusing referees than with all the cameras in the PL.
I’m surprised incidents like this aren’t more common with referees reaching breaking point at the incessant abuse they get.
What you say is very true of course, but referees these days are very well paid for what they do, what, maybe one or two matches a week at the very most? and showing restraint from the provocation that they receive, has to be an absolute must.
Darren Drysdale too has been on the Football League list for years, is very experienced, and frankly should have known better.
Years ago, playing Sunday football, there was a particulalry hard ref who rumour has it was an amateur boxer. He certainly had the build for it. I remember one game where our opposition were particularly gobby and when the ref gave a free kick against them, their mouthy centre midfielder called the ref a c**t. The ref went over to him and said "if you call me that again I'm not going to send you off, I'm going to f*****g knock you out". The rest of the game can only be described as peaceful. Nobody said a cross word to anyone for the rest of the game. Although I'm not condoning violence, their player was courting it, and the ref's response was very effective.
Why don't they charge the players? i saw sockboy getting in the ref's face and mouthing off aggressively on Saturday.

Very well paid? Are you having a laugh? the best refs earn per year what a player earns in a week.
I am very good friends with a retired ref, county league. he rarely took any shit, and similarly as has been already mentioned here had no problem with telling captains to cork it or they'd be playing 6 a side. His games were always good to watch, fair, and football rather than bun fights.
Well paid compared to ... well .....us

Collina was infamous for doing this. Players need to respect the referee.
Agree on microphones and cameras for referee.
